Re-evaluate
05/05/15 11:56 AM

About two weeks ago I crashed my BMW at a track and Indianapolis

I suffered a slight brain bleed ( which did not amount to much ) and had have diaphragm repair surgery

I'm now back at work and feeling more like my old self each day but it takes time

I think I will sell the BMW and more likely will keep the ZX 14r but you never know

it might be nice to get something brand-new. Diavel or Superduke ?

I do plan to downsize to one bike though now that I'm getting ready to get married as I don't have the free time nor need to have two bikes

Save 'yer money. That's the conclusion I'm coming to with the desire for something else. Nothing wrong with that 14R ya got...

Good point

The new/initial wow factor would eventually wear off of any new bike I may get

I'm happy to hear you are on the mend. Sounds like you had a little more than the typical fall, slide, get up and walk away track crash injuries.

I do plan to downsize to one bike though now that I'm getting ready to get married as I don't have the free time nor need to have two bikes

I have a snappy one liner but I'll save it. Not to preach but consider that you might see things 180 degrees opposite in a few years. Best to start things off on the right foot. If you likes bikes, have bikes. It might be pretty hard to sell this idea in the future if it wasn't that way from the start. If it's your decision, that's all well and good but if you feel pressure to change who you are on day one....well, ice cubes now, icebergs later.

I agree with medgardner
getting married will leave your money tree with few leaves.
Keep the 14r while your life continue to change.
Then with the help of your better half
you could make an informed decision!
Also glad to see you cam still ride!!!!!!

RE: Re-evaluate

I think both men and women get married for the same reasons. To raise children and to have security are the real reasons for marriage. raising children and having security mean different things to a man than they do a woman. I'm speaking in generalities, of course. Everyone is unique but for the most part but people are people, men are men, women are women.

Love is important but we don't get married to be in love, we should already have that before the marriage part comes in. I think you could say that delighting in (or at least being supportive of) all of the others pursuits and ambitions is a defining characterisitic of "love." Loving someone is loving what they are and what they want to be. There should be no ambiguity about this between a woman and a man. It should be all out on the table from the start, "this is what I am, this is where I'm going, can you come along?"

If your priorities are shifting because you have reached a stage in your life where motorcycling means less, fine. Have one bike. Get rid of bikes altogether if that's what suits you. It was your thing, you decide what you're going to do with it. I guess the crux of it is that marriage is not all making decisions together. You should each pretty much know what the other is going to do before they do it and be ready to support that.

so much for not preaching.

Yes. That's my point. Other obligations and changing priorities can make two bikes kind of unnecessary given the diminished time to enjoy them

I can easily take pride and fully enjoy one nice machine

Thanks for all the input

Amen to what Rook said. My first wife didn't really like the whole bike thing, escpecially when I started working part time at a shop. So now she's an ex wife. Current wife loves riding, racing and everything I do. Win- win!

Nothing out there really turns my crank like what I already have.

I think I would get bored with the Diavel or superduke; they're nice and I'd like to have one but not as my only bike

I guess that's a good sign to keep and appreciate what you have and count your blessings

But you never know what new or revised bike might be released in the next year or so

RE: Re-evaluate

Other that the wreck, and already being married with kids, we have similar riding issues. I work too much, and when Im not I spend time with family. Not much left for riding.

With that said, I have 3 bikes in my garage. It seems I buy one about every 10 years. The way I see it is that it doesn't cost much keep a bike in my garage, especially when its already paid off. I am still paying on the ZX14r, but that will be over in a year or so.

I tend to collect and maintain them, so when I can ride or when my girls are older and I have more time I will have pick of the litter, as it were. Depending on if the wife wants to go helps determine which I jump on :)

Just say'n

PS, glad your ok-ish, man :)

Thanks for the kind words

As for my 14R I am thinking about getting a new ------ to kinda refresh it. Not into "bling" or other such loud accessories but aside from a possie flash, any suggestions to freshen-up the attraction to my 14R after this episode?

Not ridden either bike at all since the wreck/surgery.

Gotta admit, Them Diavels are cool style and unique but with no dash and being almost a naked cruiser I doubt that'd hold my interest very long

The KTM Superduke 1290 would also be unique and a cool bike to have but you a drawback is I can't take the new wife with you. It's also another naked bike. Hate to invest that much then regret it shortly thereafter

The 14R is one fine, fast, smooth machine. As we all know. Leaning towards keeping it and realizing that the initial wow-factor would wear off of any new bike I may get. And the new bike, more than likely wouldn't have the assets the 14R has. After something like this it is kind of easy to get complacent and forget what you have/how good you've got it

I do know that it's unnecessary for me to have two bikes with the more time that I have to ride; so it will be one bike for me after this

But does the desire to get something new (temporary desire?) override my love of the 14 R? You more than likely take a loss every time you trade, also have to keep that in mind

I'm on my third ZX14, so there is something there that can't be replaced. Other than a new ZX14.
No other bike can take you there. Only Kawasaki builds those.

zman I'm having a hard time relating to your post. I'm 7500 miles in...loving Evora more every day. Looking for new lines in the few curves I can find, she's always ready to provide a new thrill. If I could change 2 things, it would be shorten wheelbase 1-2" and drop her 50 lbs. Both are doable, but not really cost justified for my level of riding.

Word of advice. DO NOT get the super duke 1290 - noooo. Gearing is short. Most bikes will eat them - no top end. Second I have an acquaintance with one. He was asked if he put slicks on his dirt bike? It was embarrassing when he had to correct and call it a "sport bike." They really do have cheap plastics. Last...the price tag. For mid 20's there is so much other bike you can buy. Stay away. It's a poser bike for kids.

I have a Superduke 1290R and a 2014 ZX-14R. The SD pulls hard, but not as hard as the ZX-14R. The SD is a comfortable bike and is good for 2-up riding. However, with the lack of a fairing, the wind blows you around a bit when over 100 mph. It actually corners better on the tighter curves than the ZX-14R in my opinion. The SD is not the best looking bike though. Overall, I like the ZX-14R better and would pick it over the SD if I had to go to one bike.

^^ Ergos on the bike for us tall riders are excellent. Which colour do you have? I think the black looks sinister. I think the black is Gorgeous actually. But beyond the brembo and exhaust note it is still a naked bike. Some really like that look. The Unfortunate thing, however, it will require some mods before it can hang with the big boys. And I mean hang. Thanks for the honest appraisal.

^^ post a pic please.

Thanks for the input guys

I do like the looks but it is an -entirely- different feel than what our bike is, granted

Good for a passenger huh? Seems the passenger seat is almost non existent. ??

What kind of low/mid range pull does it have and feel like ?

I realize it will not hold with the 14 in the quarter mile but off the line but I would think it probably would, correct? The power to weight ratio is apparently rather high for the Superduke. I need to test ride one !
