power commander quick shifter issue
07/31/15 6:43 PM

Hey all,

So a local dealer just fitted my power commander 5 and power commander quick shifter onto my 2012 zx14r. I have only gone on just 2 quick rides with it, but i'm already having an issue.

When it works, it works AMAZINGLY. Smooth, quick and clean shifts. When it doesn't work it's a nightmare....It seems as if the bike slips into neutral between shifts, rev's high b/c i'm on the throttle then slips into the gear it's supposed to be in. Back tire spins, sounds awful, can't be good for the trans. Made me literally almost want to return the damn thing. Not like it happened once either. Happens enough to piss me the F$#$ off. Happens more often when i'm actually counting on it like when i'm doing a pull also which is very frustrating.

When i'm doing this i'm ALWAYS on the throttle, I never shift before 4k rpm's. I have to basically shift hard as hell to get the damn thing to shift b/c if I pussy foot it, it doesn't work. Anyone have this issue and if so PLEASE PLEASE tell me how you resolved it and if not where can I start diagnosing the issue.

That quick shifter (assuming you are using a dynojet) is not meant to go from, 1-2, but it is meant for 2-3-4-5-6.... You will have to play around with the kill times which are adjustable with the PCV, lower is better BUT you have to shift firmly, cant lazy shift it WOT from gear to gear or else you WILL have an issue. Have to be consistent..... Start at about 65ms and do not shift 1-2 or you will break something
I have had several quick shifters, best one I have found is the HM plus but its very pricey

seno is correct. Gotta jump in the Hz signal program and start feeling the best combo. The pc is wired to the injectors. That's a strike against it vs what seno uses. Second strike against going up against the cut is the flash. My flash that I guessed at shifts the trans fine, but I short shift to keep the rpm down and when I swap back to stock, big difference and that frequency change.

So between the angle of fuel cut, not ign cut, ahhhh, yer fuked. If this is for race, better the ign cut. If this is street, sans the flash, sell the pc cutter and wallet up to the exchange rate as in pricy... I'll say. And your third strike is the switch only works one way. Push is kill so if say up is street, down is gp, then flip to the pressure side is the up the gear range.

Shift down, no kill for street. The latest ss has kill for up and rev for downshifts.

anyone else specifically have a Dynojet quick shifter with this issue? If not what was your kill setting set at?

Yes,I had one with the exact same issue..... After playing around with the settings I shifted mine around 65. Post a picture of your linkage please, I want to see how they set it up. Here is how I had mine setup

Depending on how they setup your linkage will make all the difference in the world, these are just a switch and have to be adjusted properly to work properly. If they just took the lazy way out and used the adhesive mount, it will work like shit and come off sooner than later unfortunately. On the other hand if they actually set it up like mine or drilled the case and mounted a bolt through it should be able to be set up somewhat reliably (but not perfect like the HM unit), Mine was very good but there were too many missed shifts at WOT for my liking (usually 3rd going into 4th). I would be lieng if I told you it was not very cool when it worked properly....

There you go. I'd be so hard core having this rod have zero slop, let along that top adjuster nut just about this side of a hair trigger cut in half that hair.

I want to see how they set it up

Right. Any movement [if any] of the linkage they used, has to be taken up first... Make sense trying to find out if it's software or hardware?

I lowered the amount of play to 7-10mm and set rpm's at 6k and kill time at 60ms and now it doesn't even work. Brought it to stock settings and didn't work so however I remounted it messed it up somehow. In the picture above is how the dealer did it originally.

N?G! Look at the flex of the top extended mount. This is a pressure sensitive unit and any movement unloading the compression (mounting arm) is going to compromise the shift quality. JMO = Meguyveer.

How would I play that mount? see the air gap between arm and cover? I'd run a dime in between the arm and cover, squeeze goop glue over the arm, dime, washer, nut, something to support the arm from moving/flexing.

Well..... The piece looks too flimsy to maintain "zero". If I was mounting this on a gen 2, it would go through the counter-shaft sprocket cover (drilling & mounting permanently).... Another option would be using a piece of threaded rod and going through the existing hole that it's mounted to. Regardless what you have is definitely not going to be reliable, there is just too much flex. Fast forward a few months when your shifter is not as smooth as it was new, it's going to be more unreliable.
If you have the box with the Dynojet parts, there should be a 90° angle bracket, you might be able to use that instead of the piece they made... Remove the eyelet and secure it that way.
I hope you didn't pay too much for what they made you....

Grn14 is absolutely correct your upper mount is so flimsy it could never work right.
you need ZERO PLAY.
Seno has the right idea but even his looks like it could be reinforced at the 90degree bend by we;ding in a triangular piece of metal, less flex. Then paint it flat black so it blends in.
OR
BUY the HM lever SS quick-shifter
It works FLAWLESS
AND
simple to install and virtually no adjustments.

Just for the record, there was a standoff placed on the bolt the bracket was mounted to and the bushing & hole it went into was threaded with a nut behind it... It was pretty solid for using Lowe's hardware and some ingenuity. That bike is long gone, the dumb ass let his friend try it and he wrecked it.... Then fixed it and wrecked it beyond repair.... Some people should not own bikes.

The loss of a bike even thought you no longer own it
is still PAINFUL.
That happened to my 94 zx11 after I sold it.

I recently discovered the cool features for ignition/fuel cut/gear the PCV has. I'm curious to see if it can work with my HM shifter.

Step 30, Quickshifter Configuration, HERE. Seems like it would work with any quickshifter but you would need to wire into the PCV. I'd really like to be able to adjust kill times/gear and probably cut fuel for NOS.
