stock exhaust/flies out, next?
05/15/14 10:14 AM

About to pull the flies and I'm well aware that I'll need to do a few other things,
but I'm getting a lot conflicting input from Dyna, Ivans etc.

Ivans or Gipro TRE? power commander3 or 5?
Do I need to do anything else to access the bikes low end?
I fine with the power other than the lack of bottom end/flat spot.
Please help, I'm not confused quite enough yet.
Yes, I know this is old for most of you, but not for me.
Thanks for the forthcoming knowledge and abuse.

5 for sure.

Ivan's mapping? Make your own map?

I fine with the power other than the lack of bottom end/flat spot.
Ivan sets you up with a map/tre/5?

To simplify everything, just get an ecu flash from a reputable shop man. Once its flashed there is no need to remove the flies because they are opened sooner via the ecu. Also, according to brocks there is a power loss of 1 or 2 hp up top with the flies removed. There are tons of other benefits from a flash so do some homework on it.

This is not the first time I've heard suggestions about modding that are counterintuitive. I'm sure Brock would know but do you recall if he offered any explanailtion for the increase in hp with flies in? I can't see how leaving the flies in would increase hp. I can believe that they would have no effect on intake when fully open but how could they increase hp?

Rook, when the secondary fly's are removed; the bar they are screwed onto is still there. Correct?

I would think having them still in, must allow for smoother airflow (past the square mounting bar) at high rpm. The exposed flat spot has to cause some turbulence without the blade edge to direct the air past the shaft.

Thus making for better peak hp, AND improved low end when they open quicker due to a flash.

I'm no expert, but this would be my guess looking at the pictures of a thread where they are removed.

See this thread. http://www.zxforums.com/forums/zx-14-forum/7500-flies-out-picture-guide.html

That seems the only possible explanation. However, the actuator rod where the plates mount will still operate as if the flies were in after they are removed. That rod you see is flat so when it turns 90 degrees to the full open position, you will be looking at the thin side. The width will be turned so it stands vertically. Same as if the plates were still on it. So IDK??

One of the engine mods is to machine the actuator down to a thin, round dowel, maybe3/32". I have no idea if that improves anything but there is a company out there that offers that as well as head and throttle body porting + cam degreeing. There is probably a good way to remove the secondary actuator rod completely but that would mean fixing the holes in the TB bores + I'm sure it would throw a code. prolly that's why they leave the rod in.

The flies may or may not create an additional Venturi effect while they are still in, causing a higher/faster air flow into the throttle bodies. Or maybe the rod causes a turbulence that disrupts the air flow at higher speeds effecting the peak hp?

Brock shows the loss on the Dyno. Once Ram air gets introduced ??? That we can't see. Lee's Fastest Run was made with Flies Out. Leads one to believe at wide open throttle on a moving bike the power loss effect = Zero. Food for thought or debate.

First off, thanks to everyone for your input.
I decided to start with an ECU Flash and go from there.
Sent it off to Schnitz Racing for a $75 flash.
WOW!!!!!!!
It is now the bike I was expecting when I bought it last fall.
Turn around was fast, and what a value.
Going take a ride up Hwy89 through the Sierras today.
Pretty twisty ride, I'm thinking the bottom end should greatly improve my experience.
CHP presence may be too inhibiting to truely enjoy myself.
So far I've only been to work and back, more feedback later.
