Brake Master Cylinder Stuck
09/09/21 8:16 PM

Hey guys, it has been almost 5 years since I was here last. My bike has not been ridden in over 4 years. The bike was totaled in a parking lot at low speeds and then I took some time off. The cost of the repairs is less than $500 though. Anyway, because it has not been ridden, it is stuck. I cannot get the hand brake to function. I tried to bleed it but nothing works. The piston seems totally stuck. How do I fix?

Here is a youtube video of the issue.

Thanks as always for the support!

Also, what is up with all the NIKE spam posts?

Do we have the banjo bolt at the caliper being loose as you bleed it? You do know that brake fluid eats paint, right?

If so, it says you don't have any lever because the banjo is still loose? You have all that fluid on the floor, so I'm going by that vague video of the banjo in question.

So it's more you find those bleed nipples with the rubber boot over them. Some are 8mm or 10mm. The nipples are 8mm so use a box end side, hold the paper towel over the nipple; break the nipple open; pull one time to the grip and close the nipple.

That banjo [if loose] is back to being tight again so we are back up at the master and that nipple bleed to get the lever back. After that one open/close, you are pumping that lever back up and watch the bubbles come back up the rez. At the vid, you have the right amount to bleed from. Once you get a lever back, then you top it off to the line.

This way, it's low and will spill less out if bumped/return flies up out of the rez/etc. If you see the level drop, you are filling that line up and the bubbles are coming up to the master. You can tell by the bubbles in the rez. Then you might have to re-bleed the master's nipple again and it's just one open, pull lever to the grip; and before you reach the grip; you are closing the nipple at the same time.

Release the lever and wait a few minutes. Then start pumping the lever again. It's a fill liquid-displace air. So the pumping is key. So key, I can open the caliper' nipple, pump the lever over and over. Then that last pull to the grip, I close the nipple before it reaches the grip. Then pump the lever over and over till I get a hard lever again.

ASSIST:

See if this helps. Keep jerking off that lever in other words. Squids open and close and ruin the taper at the caliper and cause a potential leak. The key is one open and one close is more knowing the theory of a simple pump at the water well.

Brake doesn't have a slave cylinder.Just a straight shot through the master at the bars and the calipers below.I would remove the wheel, force both calipers open all the way with a smooth edged tool(something that will STAY in there to hold em open) and then check the reservoir level. If it's not changing some(rising)then it's not getting past the master. My take would be the master may have some deteriorated rubber pieces in there blocking the return hole.Opening the pads might force anything blocking out.So you can then bleed the brakes with the master plunger now returning like it should.
OR if the caliper pistons are stuck, opening may free those up.You'll just have to try it to see.Opening those will force fluid to the master.IF there's enough fluid in that line. There should be if nothing has changed level wise in the 5 years.Forcing the left side caliper open will push fluid across the line that goes to the right side caliper. But you need to make sure that BOTH pad sets are fully open.At least doing that will rule out any problem at the calipers.
I mean, that's what I would try.I suspect your master is being blocked at the return hole.
Forcing fluid through may push the master plunger back out if it's somehow stuck.

Was the lever operational(plunger pin against it and holding the lever out)or was it as it is now in the video?

Update. I got it all resolved. The piston was super stuck and I had to completely tear it down and use an air compressor to press it out. Then I let it soak in part cleaner(removing all rubber from the piston before soaking) and wire brush the oxidation then put it all back together. Then bleed the brake system. She is ready to roll. Thanks for the support guys.
