Connecting rods and bearings
02/23/21 12:02 AM

Hi all,

I ride a ZX14 Gen 1, 2007 to be specific. A question on conrods, does this bike only have standard size or there are other sized on conrod bearings? and what do the colors black, blue and brown mean on the conrod bearings sizes.

I am lost

Think of it like a number 5 and break it down:
1 - Is too tight and out of range.
2 - Is the [tight] side and within spec = Brown.
3 - Is the [ideal] number when reading gap specs = Black.
4 - Is the max [loose] range without breaking out of spec = Blue.
5 - Is too loose and out of range.

So if you have a lot of miles on the crank, the journals are polished without score lines, it is wearing down that outer circle. So they have tighter bearing inserts for that reason. By removing the score lines, the crank becomes weak as material is machined off of that crank throw, and these bearing are not going to take up that kind of shaved away clearance due to machining those grooves away.
