electrical problem or ??
05/05/14 12:44 PM

Hi all, can anyone help please, I had my ECU flashed a couple of yrs ago, everything running fine. I noticed the other day when riding that the temp gauge blocks disappeared and started flashing , the range, gear indicator disappeared, and the rev needle went from 5000rpm to zero. I carried on and it seemed to me that every bump I went over it came back to normal then the next bump flashing, disappeared and needle to zero again, and so on.

ive checked all the front end connection blocks and there fine, checked the ECU connection blocks , also good, no dirt , corrosion etc

has anyone any ideas please, and thanks in advance

Nick

similar to an experience i had a couple years back. Riding the bike right after a wash with the garden hose, the speedo went up to about 90 mph and the bike started jerking like it was cutting fuel intermitently. It was not smooth like the rev limiter, it was jerky. the jerky engine came and went a few times then the speedo went to 0 and just stayed there.

no codes. I don't recall loosing the temp gauge or anything else. just no speedo.

I rode the bike about 15 miles and parked it. when I came back a few hours later, both neeedles swept and the bike started and ran fine. I determined it was the Speedo healer which hooks in line with the speed sensor. It must have got some water in it. I avoid dousing that area now and I have the connectors taped. Never had the problem again.

Cheers Rook, you were lucky , it stopped . Mine just seems to keep doing it every time I take it out, but it only seems to do it when it gets warm, but that might be a coincidence.

hmmm- it sure sounds as if there is a loose connection in the electrical system somewhere.

When my battery died on me, the ECU and the instrument cluster made a clicking noise and the temp / fuel bars flashed back and forth. The bike would not start. Any chance it's your battery?

I will have a look at that tomorrow, if I get a minute, I did notice yesterday that around the ECU when I turned the bike off, that there was a clicking noise well several together, Would a loose connection on the battery cause that , I know they sometimes vibrate loose ?? But it starts first time every time, but I will try that and let you know

IDK?? Seems possible. The clicking noise on my bike sounded like a directional light clicker except much louder and about twice the speed a typical directional clicks. I have video with sound if you need it.

Did you remove the windshield and check at the back of the dash cluster? Is that what you meant by checking the front connectors?

The clicking is probably relays (ie, the turn signal relay), there's a bunch of them on the bike and could be turning on and off when they lose/get power. My first thought is a loose battery connector, specifically thinking the grounding terminal on the frame, just a gut feeling though.

Main battery cable(s) = Loss of spark. Does not happen. Only the cluster begins blinking upon bump, not engine stopping too. Make sense?

Well men , I finally got round to checking the bike over, many test rides and stripping down ,in between work and rain, WD40 in every connector block behind the screen , pushed in and out several times so there nice and free, all the blocks under the left ram air cover in the ECU blocks and it still did it, the only thing left was that I took the tool box out and therefore my ECU was moving around slightly , due to our silky smooth roads ,NOT. Fabricated a strap, and fastened it in the old tool box holes , and it worked, all back to normal.

I don't know wether it was the connectors or the ECU bouncing , but its stopped , thank Fu~k

thanks for the help anyway nick

i don't know if it was a combination of blocks and ECU bouncing , but I did every connector block I could find lol, and it still continued, it seemed that as soon as I strapped the ECU down it stopped, I too would never had thought something so small would make my life hell for 3-4 weeks lol. Plus im no wizz kid when it comes to electrics or mechanics, lol, so I really do appreciate any help at times
