As my standards drop, I think back about missed opportunity in college. There was a chick who liked me and she was a 'little person' Actually, only her lower body was a bit shorter, but everything else was A-OK.

In all seriousness, I'm sure relationships do sometimes develop between quote/unquote "normal" people and disabled (or otherwise abled) people. In many was, I'm not sure the level of functioning matters a whole lot. Able bodied/minded people in committed relationships have differences in abilities too.

Also, all people do have sexual desires regardless of their abilities. Retarded people are certainly allowed to want to have sex with whoever they find attractive just like everyone else does....so would it need to be a committed relationship??

A few instances in my life come to mind. Time for a little story.

There was an exceptionally attractive young woman, maybe 19-22 years old living next to me after I got out of college. She was probably about 98 lbs, blond, petite, small waist, beautiful round rump, cute small boobies...her body was perfect and she had a very pretty face and hair (like all women of this age have). She smiled at me every time she saw me walk by. I said hi a couple times. I must admit, even though it became apparent her IQ was substantially below average, I was starting to think about getting to know her. It was obvious she liked me and she was everything I liked at that time in terms of physical characteristics. I started noticing she had a male person with her on occasion and this guy was also a higher functioning CD person. The girl would get all smily and excited like a school kid when I said hello to them but the guy just looked at me with disgust. He hated my guts. How difficult might it have been to swoop in and take off with his retarded soulmate? Probably not very. I felt sorry for the guy and I kept my distance. For all I knew, they might have been married. One day he was laying out on the road fixing something on his car so I stopped to help. It turned out my help made a big difference in the outcome of that simple repair (though I don't recall exactly what the problem was). The guy accepted my help but I could tell he hated my guts. The girl was almost jumping up and down with excitement. I was her hero!

The moral of the story: retarded people might not be too smart but they function very much like non retarded people on many levels. Retardation is exactly what it is called (even though we don't like to call it "retarded" any more). Retardation is slow development. They eventually catch up but it might take much of their life before they reach their potential. They may be not ever get beyond the level of childlike thinking but they develop and get smarter like we all do.

..so the real question is, can you have a physical/emotional relationship with someone who is that much less developed than you are without taking advantage of them?? I think it is possible but maybe not very probable. If I could meet that girl today and she felt the way she did back then and was single, I'd damn sure give it a try. I'm equal opportunity! I do believe it would eventually become similar to caring for a child if it were a longterm relationship though. The list of retarded girlfriend pros is funny (and true to some degree) but I see a lot of conflicts caring and depending for and on an adult who is a child on the inside.

I know a girl now who goes to my gym and she is obviously retarded. She's nice. She likes me (and I believe most other men at the gym) but she is functioning on the level of a 7 or 8 year old for the most part. Higher social skills probably but I do not think she can work or drive a car. Not quite. Also very thin and a few other physical characteristics that are probably related to genetics. How can you not like a woman this young though?? I'm not planning to try to strike up a relationship outside of the gym. Must admit though, it crossed my mind. She was talking about her legs one day and I said she had nice legs. OH she loved that!

One more, I was dating a really cool albeit somewhat freaky girl back in the mid 90s. I got along great with her except for the issue of her extensive sexual resume which involved god knows how many other partners, one female and a long history of liking other girls. We got along great after I just decide to accept the number of partners in her past was what she wanted and that was not going to change. Well, there was another woman in my life not long before her. I still kept in contact with her. She still wanted to have sex-----mentioned her intrigue with other women a time or two---damn this looked like the perfect threesome opportunity. IDK? "Free spirit" are the words to describe her. She wasn't exactly a ho, she just never remained with one person because she never wanted to be committed.
