ZX14r SE 2018 Hard Luggage
11/06/18 1:07 AM

I'm struggling to locate any hard luggage that will fit my 2018 SE. All suppliers say that the 2012 stuff does not fit and I can't just order it, try it and send it back if it doesn't!

Givi & SHAD just do not make 2018 hard luggage for this sports TOURER!!!

Does anyone know the differences between the mountings for the luggage bracket between a 2012 and a 2018 models?

All ideas / suggestions / solutions gratefully accepted and appreciated

Cheers

Nick

I personally found a good deal on some used Shad 43 bags, purchased the mounting clips from Twisted Throttle then fabricated the mounting hardware. It is not on my bike now or I would shoot a photo for you. Really not too difficult and way less expensive than a purchased product anyway. Sadly my mounting brackets require wrenching on 4 bolts rather than quicker disconnects offered by manufactured units I have seen. Still, it allows me to tour with lockable, waterproof bags when I want and the bags themselves disconnect quickly.

Hi, thanks for the idea and I may have to go down that route but initially I thought I'd see if there was anything made to measure already in existence from SHAD or GIVI?
I'm waiting for my welder and tools to come from the UK so may have to resurrect my engineering skills! (Now that's frightening )

The side case mounting bracketry from Twisted Throttle that says it's only for up to the 2011 DOES fit our ZX14R's. I know, I have them on my 2013. You just need to have either aftermarket mufflers, or make a short bracket to lower the OEM exhaust an inch or so:

Hi extrapolator,
Perfect, I'm having Yoshi R-77 end cans put on. Thank you for taking the time to answer and also for the pictures; it's really appreciated.

Safe riding

Cheers

I just bought a brand new 2017 ABS SE in August. I was looking for hard saddlebags as well. The only setup that I could find was the Givi V35's with the SW Motec mounts but I didn't really want to spend almost $900 for them. I also didn't like the idea of having to lower my pipes for them to fit. A guy on the ZRX site I've been on for a long time that has a Hayabusa suggested Kappa K33N bags - that he said used the same SW-Motec racks, he also said they're made by the same company - just a more affordable line. He also said they have been hard to find here in the US which is why you don't hear about them much. I didn't find any information on them anywhere on how they fit on the ZX14r.

I researched them for a while and it wasn't 100% clear they'd work (there was conflicting information on different sites). They are slightly smaller than the V35's - 19.7"L x 12.13"W x 14.97" H (converted from metric) for the Kappa bags, 20.7"L x 12.4"W x 15.5"H for the Givi's. I was hopeful that the extra 1/2" in height would mean I could leave my pipes where they were (Yoshimura R-77 slip ons). I did find them available in the US at https://tourandride.com/cases-and-accessories/kappa/cases/monokey-side/k33n-monokey-side-case-33ltr-detail for $359 ($152 cheaper than the Givi's). By luck I found a brand new set on eBay for $266 shipped from a guy that bought them and they didn't fit his rack (which made me a little nervous but decided to take a chance). I also found the SW-Motec racks from a European company for $70 less than I could find them here. So total I had $565 invested.

Got them all in and mounted up and everything worked as I'd hoped. They fit perfectly and I didn't have to lower the pipes at all. Here's some pics of them mounted up with links below them to the full size pics if you want to look closer:

SteveStLaurent - That's great! I wouldn't have known those cases aren't the Givi's had you not said The latches, locks, shape ... everything looks the same to me.

And great savings on the various parts

Oh, most likely part of the reason you didn't have to lower your mufflers is because they're aftermarket. The OEM mufflers are the ones that need to be lowered, and possibly only the OEM mufflers as most aftermarket mufflers are smaller. I can't be sure, but that seems like a safe bet.

Anyway ... looks great.

Thank you. It's winter now here in Michigan so she's been put to bed. Come April I'll be riding down to Austin, TX for the MotoGP races - that will be our first big trip together and it can't come soon enough !

While in Austin you'll only be a couple of hours from Leakey. If you had an extra day for riding FM335,FM336 and FM337 (aka the three sisters) is about the best riding to be had in this state. It'd be a shame to go back to Michigan without having experienced that loop.

Thanks for the heads up - will put it on our list for sure. I'd planned on riding in the hill country while we're down there already. I'll be hooking up with locals from the ZRX site. I look for the curviest path possible between a and b .

Sadly my mounting brackets require wrenching on 4 bolts rather than quicker disconnects offered by manufactured units I have seen.

Which reminded me that I meant to say, the SW-MOTECH Quick-Lock side cases mounting brackets are just that, quick-lock, so if you wanna ride without your side cases, you can also remove the mounting brackets themselves with just the quarter-turn of 4 screws (on each side). You can use something like a quarter ($0.25) to turn them if you're strong enough, or otherwise a flat chunk of metal or a screwdriver; the 4 screws are very large headed and with a wide slot in them so a small screwdriver might not work. Then the side cases and mounting brackets are off and you're back to looking almost entirely stock without the utilitarian looking added hardware mucking up the looks of the bike. Some people will care, some won't. I do!

By the way - to complete the ensemble you really need the big black weber grill size top case to complement her big ol butt

SteveStLaurent - Sorry, dunno why I didn't get notified of your post. Anyway, my top case is a Givi V47 Tech Monokey and yes I'm using the SW-Motech rack and the adapter required to mount the top case, which is also quick-attach: Insert the key, turn it, pop the latch and the top case comes right off. So, to be clear you attach the SW-Motech mounting rack to the bike 'permanently' (not easy to remove once installed), then mount the adapter plate to the rack, then you can pop the top case right on to and off of the adapter plate. The adapter plate is secured to the mounting rack by three (or 4?) quarter-turn screws, very easy. This link shows it very well, as it's almost the exact same mounting rack and adapter plate: https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sw-motech-street-rack-top-case-rack ... main difference being that the adapter plate in this link is secured with a flip-latch instead of the 3 or 4 screw for the ZX14 version.

Note: My buddy got the V56, and if I didn't already have the 47 I'd get the 56. It's 9 more liters which is 19% bigger, and when they're both open it's definitely noticeable. I like to put my helmet and jacket in there, and in the 47 it's really tight. And my jacket is a fairly thin textile jacket with no back protector. It wouldn't fit with the protector in. If you have a leather jacket or anything thicker than textile, and/or your have all the internal armor, it's unlikely you'll get your helmet and jacket in the 47.

By the way, I ordered the optional key set so my side cases and top case all use the same key

Thanks, that helps. I was kind of hoping you were using a different rack. I don't want a case up that high. I was hoping to get one in tighter/lower. I was looking at the K49 Tech case from Kappamoto. But now that I know the details on the size of yours, etc - I'm going to go with the soft luggage carrier. I was thinking it would be convenient to be able to leave my helmet there. But I've been carrying a leather jacket and helmet around with me for the last 33 years so I can live with it.

Main thing was I need is something to lash my chair, tent, and sleeping bag to. The soft luggage carrier will allow for that.

BTW, twisted throttle has the zx14 sw-motech alu-rack right now for 40.45! I already snapped mine up.

Unless you were to move the top case onto the rear seat, I don't think you'd get it a whole lot lower than mine. This mount is as thin as you can get while still being strong enough, and I think it's as low as possible, too. And the adapter is only about an inch thick (tall), prob as minimal as can be. If you're concerned about looks, yeah I get that. If you're concerned about wind, don't be: I honestly cannot tell the top case is back there. I can ride exactly the same with or without it.

10-4 ... One of my buds rides a ZRX with just a roll-up soft pack that he straps across the rear seat perpendicular to the line of travel, and that works fine for him. For me, now that I've had a hard case to lock up my helmet and jacket, I'm spoiled. No desire to drag those things around if I don't have to. It's probably like cruise control on a bike: Nobody probably neeeeds it, but once you've had it it's probably kinda sad to go back

Main thing was I need is something to lash my chair, tent, and sleeping bag to. The soft luggage carrier will allow for that.

Gotcha

Wait! What?! You're getting the Alu-rack that's shown at $237 on Twisted Throttle for $41?!?! NICE!

Make that $47 but it looks like that is a new model. Here's the one I bought: https://www.twistedthrottle.com/sw-motech-alu-rack-toprack-kawasaki-zx14r-zzr1400-ninja-06-12-black-for-givi-trax-alu-box-krauser-topcases . If you compare them it looks like the holes and the way the other accessory racks lock on have changed. I bought mine on Saturday when it was on sale for $121.35.

Then on Monday I got an email from them saying they had to move these out and there were 5 left for for the $47 price you see above. I called them and they refunded me the difference. Amazing deal, kind of like hitting the lottery!

This is the rack I'll be mounting to it: https://www.twistedthrottle.com/sw-motech-alu-rack-topcase-adapter-plate-for-attaching-soft-luggage . It'll be a major upgrade from my last setup (see below). I'm on the right and on that trip did 5,000 street miles plus 140 or so miles of off road single track in the first 3 days (friend hauled my CR250 and gear for me). There was a small rack back there that the tent and chair are on - and a Corbin backrest between them and the sleeping bag. With this I think I'll be able to get them all on the rack.

Last day of this trip got my Iron Butt saddlesore done with almost 1,100 miles in about 20 hours (it was quite a few years ago and I don't remember exactly).

No, I don't. I came down with a very rare auto immune disease 6 years ago where in 6 weeks I went from racing enduros to not being able to stand. Was wheel chair bound for about 3 months and have been slowly getting it under control (with ups and downs) ever since. It was hard seeing it sit there knowing I might not be able to ever ride again and I wanted it out on the road getting ridden so I sold it.

A year and a half ago I bought an 83 Spectre 750 and rode it occasionally. Health got quite a bit better over the last year and came across a great deal on the 14 in August and here I am :)
