Won't start
05/01/18 5:37 AM

So I am at a loss with diagnosing my issue. Hopefully some of yall can help.
The bike sat all winter. Battery obviously went dead, got a new battery. Bike started and ran perfectly, was ready to ride except I had to do a brake job.
Did the job, went to start it for a test run, it fired but sounded like crap, and died after about 10 seconds. Then it started again, but died even faster. Now, it won't start at all. Only symptom is that the fuel pump sounds wrong. Has a deeper sound than normal. Almost like it is running dry. Full tank of gas, no fault codes or anything on the dash. Pump primes like normal, cycles for the normal duration, just sounds off.

It does want to fire, just wont turn over anymore. I haven't touched anything with the airbox to cause such a sudden issue. I am getting a syphon today to get all the gas out of her, throw some injector cleaner and fresh higher octane gas in there in hopes that either the filter is gummed up, or debri is blocking it somehow (although I have seen pictures of the filter system on this bike, I doubt it could be that).

Shes an 06 with about 11k miles.

Lower pitched = turning slow = dead battery. I would first take the new battery out and charge it. It probably was low when you bought it. Just enough for one start, the alternator didn't have time to charge it up to full.

Look at your multifunction meter. How many volts does it say? If less than 12, that's probably too low to start. 11.5 V might do it--usually not.

You keep cranking on it (waste of time and hard on the motor too), you would eventually get a clicking noise from the relays in the tail. Also, LCD meter will go berzerk flashing left to right. That there is a totally dead battery--it would not even crank. That's a sign you need to change battery immediately. I do not think a good battery will normally draw down that low even after 5 months.

I wouldn't bother with that until you try charging the battery to full. The old one might still be good too. Pick up a can of Sea Foam fuel system cleaner and put in 5 oz to a full tank of gas. That's always good. I use a small dose every other fill or so even when not stored.

I would be sure the battery was been fully charged prior to installation. It was /is probably ok but it is thefirst place I dble check.then go from there.

Appreciate the input fellas, but it wasn't battery. I had charged it fully before putting it into the bike,

In case it helps anyone else, I did fix it. Drained the gas, poured in half a bottle of seafoam, and a full bottle of stabil, put in fresh 93 gas. Pretty sure it was a combination of gumming on the fuel filter, and water in the gas. Had to try and start it about 100 times, but eventually she did start. Rough at first, but I held the rpms up to 2.5k for about 30 seconds, and she leveled off and ran perfect on her own. Went out today, she started up perfectly.

Really mostly surprised that it did that so abruptly, it started and ran perfectly the day before (on the same battery).

Glad she's running but just be ready incase you have further fuel system trouble. The fuel filter clogging is a known problem. I have heard of people having trouble that was cured with fuel system cleaners but it came back immediately after being off the cleaner. There is a prefilter and a main filter both in the fuel pump. You can replace the prefilter but the main, I do not believe you can do it without replacing the whole fuel pump.

Sea Foam is powerful stuff. You can throw parts in it and it will dissolve carbon deposits and varnish. It might dissolve delicate metal too. I'd stick to the max 1 oz Sea Foam/gallon of gas recommendation.
