Dropping the engine
10/10/19 5:21 AM

I have all the mounting bolts out, but the frame won't come off. One of the mounting points just pivots. Is there a castellated bushing like the one in the swingarm pivot? It's also unbolted but still only pivots.

I sold my shop manual, so advice and/or experience would be appreciated.

No just removing everything from the broken frame. Looks like there are some threaded inner spacers that need to be spun in with the loose bolts to make clearance between the engine and frame. Engine still runs like a watch.

Cool. Good luck with the frame replacement then.

Not doing that, either. I'm parting it out. By the time I bought a frame and everything else it would take, I'd have more in it than it would be worth, and that's not even counting labor. I have everything (other than the goodies that are already sold) except most bodywork-complete front end, wheels, brakes, electricals, pegs and brackets, controls, brake and clutch m/cs, hard bags and mounts. All is for sale.

Ah--it's been a while but I think I recall your mentioning a crash. I hope you have plans for a new bike soon.

Bought a new bike a year ago-KTM Super Duke GT. 80 lbs lighter than The Blue Whale II with a similar power-to-weight ratio. 13,000 miles so far.

Back on topic, KO's post clarified the procedure. The rear engine mount through-bolts have a hex under the heads that turns an adjustable spacer to let the engine free. I apparently turned the bottom one when I removed it, but the upper one was still tight. Re-insertion of the bolt allowed me to loosen the spacer and the frame is now ready to pull off. As soon as the oil is drained, the motor will be crated for shipping.

So maybe that is who will pick up where the 14 left off...

You may be a forerunner, Danno.

Actually I'm just looking to act more my age(68.5) and ride something a bit easier to handle. I know I'm probably stupid for not getting another ZX-14. They are probably the most elegantly-engineered machines I've ever been around.
