Custom Carbon?
06/14/16 8:53 AM

Speaking of group purchases. I'm looking at getting a few pieces of carbon fiber cut and drilled to match metal parts on our bikes. I would think that we could get some discounted prices if there was any interest in doing a group order for at least a few pieces.
1. Mirror block off plates (Don't like the bulky/chunky aluminum plates)
2. Airbox inspection plates (Don't really want to make my own as there should be a milled cut in the plate to accept the rubber gasket.
3. Air filter cover. Gen 1 was flexible plastic, Gen 3 is thick aluminum.
4. Aluminum bars in subframe, C channel bars that should be easy to replace with lighter carbon fiber plates for those that don't carry luggage/passengers.
Are there any other simple pieces that could be easily made of a lighter material?

The air cleaner cover is important. There's a reason they went to the heavy aluminum one over the plastic one on the 06-07. Dirt was getting by. They later went to a stamped steel plate cover on the 2010. It actually weighs more than the aluminum one. I have it. Best option would be the aluminum with some lathe work to lighten it up. I wouldn't trust a company that didn't test this part no matter what it was made of.

I guess I'd want an aluminum border for rigidity and gasket sealing under plastic or cf air box caps for the same reason.

As few miles as I'll drive I think it might make sense to find the plastic piece and just put gorilla/duct tape under it.
If only I had money to be able to have all the custom carbon pieces that I want made..

I'm making some progress towards my goals. So far I have carbon fiber: clip on bars, air cleaner cover, engine access covers, battery cover, exhaust bracket, heel guards, reservoir mounts, mirror block offs, wheels, and subframe brace bars.

Still working on the gas tank, front and rear subframes..

Carbon clip ons are 210 grams lighter each, than stripped down stock bars, stronger than stock, and absorb some vibration.
Carbon engine access covers are about 200 grams lighter total. Should help dampen vibrations, and should be stronger than stock.
Battery cover is quite a bit lighter than stock, can't find the other weights right now unfortunately.

battery cover,

I wouldn't toss aside the CF one you have on there but I just go without the rear battery cover. It doesn't seal the opening anyway. I doubt it blocks out much dust even.
