Winter storage
09/09/17 8:37 PM

Hello
how do you store your zx14 for the winter?
I keep mine in the garage and I really don't want to start it in the middle of cold winter here in ohio.
What do you people doto put it away for the winter that live in cold areas like mine?
Thanks for all the help.

Goes in the garage on a trickle charger with fuel stabilizer. In the springtime it will fire right up if you do those 2 things.

my list is on there. I wouldn't bother with turning the engine by hand, that will just wipe away whatever oil is on it. I wouldn't fog the motor with oil either unless you plan to change spark plugs right after the first start.

I never start mine until I can ride it.

It's kept in a good shed and I put it up on front and rear stands. I fill the tank with fresh gas, give it a heavy does of Stabil and then run the engine a bit with that mixture. I put it on a trickle charger and don't start it until Spring. Haven't had a problem with any of my bikes when following those procedures.

I live in Indiana so our storage times are probably similar, somewhere around 5 months.

Change oil & filter, preferably as the very last thing you do.

Gas
If you have it in your area, store the bike with E0. You won't need stabil, you won't need anything. Be sure to run the last couple tanks of the year with E0 as to be sure you've used up all the ethanol blend.

If you only have ethonal blends, Kawasaki now recoemmends empyting the bike completely of fuel. I would drain the tank, and then run the bike out of fuel (do this a few times because).

Location
Not as important as keeping the bike covered, away from people, pets, or critters that might damage it. Outdoors is fine, sheds fine, garage is fine. Just be sure critters can't get into it and for example build a hive or nest. From time to time, people report this happening. Be sure to seal the exhaust and place a tag over the key hole that the exhuast has been covered.

If you can, store the bike with the suspension unloaded and tires off the ground. Outdoors, place the tires on something which will keep them elevated. If you ride a lot probably not big deal as tires might be replaced at least once a season any way.

I might be more inclined to fog the cylinderes if I was storing the bike outdoors. Otherwise, for a few months not really worth doing.

Battery
If you have a battery tender, hook it up. If you don't, I recommend removing the battery from the bike.

mice or small rats may make a nest inside voids of the engine compartment...
for nesting material they sometimes decide to shred the electrical harness

having experienced this once, i now use an integral bike cover, zippers & all
the Komine AK-104 full motorcycle cover does the job nicely...

Thanks for all the answers.
I had couple of zx11 up until couple month ago when I traded my zx11 for my 2006 zx14.
My only concern was really about the gas since I used to drain the carbs on my zx 11 but is seems that using some fuel stabilizer is the new way of doing it.
I usually put sandwich bags over the exhaust opening with a rubber band and elevated front and back tires off the ground as well as letting some air out of them for the winter month.
Critters is not an issue for my attached car garage where we keep both cars that we ride daily.

If your main concern was about fuel, I've always just filled up the tank to the top, no stabilizer and she's fired up in the spring every single time. If you're planning on doing significant maintenance (specifically valve adjustments) during the winter then draining the tank is your best bet as a full fuel tank is a pain to deal with.

I don't know if you need fuel stabilizer for a few months but Seafoam is an excellent cleaner.

hate to admit this on the board but I have gas that is almost 1 year old in my 14 right now. Haven't ridden her enough to burn the tank of storage gas yet. Started great and runs great. Full dose of Seafoam with non ethanol premium last October. I wouldn't run that through a lawnmower without a good stabilizer. Hope to use that up by the end of October so I can put a fresh tank in to store until next season.

Here is how I stored it last year, will do the same from now on. Full tank of non-ethanol fuel, with fuel stabilizer run through the system, and kept on a battery maintainer. Fires right up in the Spring

LOL NFS that's awesome but let's face it you're in the 1% that can do something this cool. Just out of curiousity do you notice any odors, fuel, oil, tires etc? I suppose I have spare tires in my house and after a while they stopped out gassing.

Rook lol 1 yo gas is nothing...still baby gas! How about some rusty, contaminated 14 yo gas?

"Pop" bottles! They might be yoopers! IDK--just because you can doesn't mean you should!

No odors at all, almost like they weren't even there.

"Pop bottles"
The plate on the bike is from BC. I don't think anyone from British Columbia would use any other word.

and no Yooper worth his salt would either, Eric. We're pretty much the same thing as Canada up here except we have a good President now.

Here is how I stored it last year, will do the same from now on.

.
In the 70's, this is how I used to "park" my 1974 Kaw 750 triple. I kept it in my apartment every night. Hell I'd park my zx14 in my living room now if I could, it would save me monthly garage fees.
