Question
08/16/15 7:00 AM

My 2012 sits noticeable higher than my buddies 2011,
Since I got mine back from the accident i thought it sat higher than normal, but all the bikes around here are lowered and extended so no way to know..
Best I can describe is it sits like my zx10R (leaning forward alps in tank) and the 2011 sits level... Only difference is tires I have 55 rear Vs 50..
I can't remember how it sat when I bought it but I don't remember my balls in the tank.

Seat height is identical between the first and second gen. Dig around in your suspension area and see if anything is binding. Also make sure your swing arm is swinging freely. Do a quick sag test.

RE: Question

How badly was it damaged? If they had to work around the shock,it's possible they removed it,and somehow got the links not set at the factory settings?IDK if the factory bones are adjustable.Just a thought.

A 55 wouldn't be noticeable.I have that on mine.Maybe not having sat on it for awhile, you now feel the slope of the factory seat.It DOES have a slope to it...that's why I reshaped mine.I know what you mean about the angle.

"I can't remember how it sat when I bought it but I don't remember my balls in the tank"...agreed.That's the first thing that I noticed with mine.

"My 2012 sits noticeable higher than my buddies 2011"...and they're all lowered as you say.Naturally, she's gonna sit higher...that'd be normal.

I remove my set a lot of times. I always go to the front and down to the side of the seat, pull it away to see if it is out of the spot-welded tangs at the side of the tank?

Ahh that's a good thought. Be sure your tabs on the tank are engaging the plastic slots on the seat correctly. I'd think you'd notice the gap but it's worth a shot. O and the factory links aren't adjustable.

RE: Question
08/16/15 7:01 PM

There is a huge difference in height between the 50 and 55 series tire
It very well might be just that.

2004 zx12 1290cc 191std HP 495 lbs
2014 zx14r 195sae HP 520 lbs
2014 Loring AFB 14 runs over 200mph
with a best of 208.1 in 1.5 miles
and 204.5 in the mile.
Now the Turbo 14R - best of 223.1 in the mile and 224.6 in the 1.5

RE: Question

the typical difference between 50 and 55 is 3/8ths. Then divide that by 2 and that's the increase in height. So it would increase the ride height ~3/16".

Seat is in the tabs... I will try and get a pic of our bikes together .. Mine clearly sits higher in the back it can't be missed that's how much a difference there is..
The links are installed correctly only other thing I can check is shock and swingarm lengths ? ?

RE: Question

Where's Hagrid...I have some and ready. What's your rear shock reading in inches(mm) at the top where the adjusters sit on up to end of the threads? Can't remember off the top of my head...what it should be.But it's in the service manual.Maybe even in the owner's manual. That could be WAY off..maybe.Depending.That's your rear ride height adjuster(preload).

Well..it's not in the owner's manual....and I can't find my service manual...the measurements I mentioned(from where to where)may not be correct...but the SM does show the pic of the measurement and where.

RE: Question

Ok the suspension barley moves (stiff) when I sit on it.. So I'm thinking someone moved the rebound/compression settings..

They look correct (from looking at mine and other bike) but I will measure mine ..

So im gonna attempt to adjust them back to stock..

RE: Question

That's not grn it's the locknut for the swingarm shaft I was just checking the torque specs guessing something could be binding as mentioned above..

The spring length is 7" dead on top to bottom.

RE: Question
08/18/15 5:55 PM

LOL...Okay!Thanks Black...thought I was losin it for a minute;)That pic there with the measurements...that's what I was talkin about. So how was yours?I know you can raise or lower that ride height by using aftermarket dogbones...I did it.

I always understood with the factory shock that the ride height was determined by the adjuster rings. They do say 'ride height adjustment' in their brochure. Is it something else I'm not seeing or understanding?I can't imagine WHY your bike would be sitting up higher if nothing was changed on the rear there.Maybe they cranked the preload WAY up on it?That's all I can figure.Soft adjustment(s) should LOWER the frame. To a certain point that is...at least back to stock height.

I don't know what part of your bike got damaged...BUT...did they do any fork replacements? If so...they MAY have 'lowered' the front end by setting the forks in there differently than factory.THAT could cause a forward lean into the tank(on the seat). How's your feet feel sitting on her.The same?As when 'new'?I should say...are you feet still in the same position on the ground, but the front has more angle forward?

It can ONLY be a couple of things causing this.Did they replace the seat with an earlier model? That could cause the sloping difference.

You say the spring length is 7"...okay...that's higher than the factory setting.Might try adjusting that first...see what happens..but it could be the forks...that would make it feel sloping as well...

RE: Question

Compression: When I sit on the bike, no movement = Compression.
Rebound: When I dismount off the bike, slow movement returning back up to static = Rebound.
Spring: When I sit on the bike, push the bike down with my hand on the seat, it begins to pogo-stick = Spring.

I need to sag my suspension... Stop looking at other bike heights... This answers the question.

RE: Question
08/18/15 6:10 PM

My spring length is 7" when measured .. According to the book it should be 6.9 for factory.
I returned the compression and rebound back to factory settings also ..

The spring feels stiff like its to far open but the measurement is right.?.? I gotta go get my key and take it around the block .. Right now after adjust the compression and rebound, and setting that locknut to the right torque my feet feel flatter and my knees are slightly bent while sitting on bike, (feels right) .. I'll know when I ride it tho...

So you're saying that the swingarm movement was binding the shock action? You loosened the swingarm bolt and now the shock is able to rebound and compress correctly?I think that's what you're saying...yes?

That's my guess as it was way over the specified torque. I loosened it and then re torqued it ..
