Valve stem creep
05/06/18 12:27 PM

My valve stem on the front tire has been slowly loosening. I've noticed for the last year or so that my front tire would need air about every couple of months and then every few weeks lately. Today when I checked the air, the tire was way low at about 5 psi. I also noticed the valve stem was sticking out too far, so I broke out my 4-way valve stem tool and sure enough it was really loose. It tightened up well, so the threads are not bad. This is the first bike that I've ever owned that the valve stem had worked itself loose. Anyone else ever had a stem creep out on you?

They aren't supposed to need to be very tight but I've never had that happen on any vehicle. Put some bees wax on the threads if it happens again. It's supposed to help seal but it might help prevent loosening too. OR go all the way to Lock-Tite. You'll be changing that valve next tire change anyway.

Valve stem creep? I’ve never heard of this either.
I once had a shrader valve that wouldn’t seat properly causing slow air loss and just used a touch of liquid gasket (Hylomar) as a temporary fix which actually lasted until the next tyre/valve change. Never had one actually unscrew though.

Personally, I wouldn't ride it. I'd buy a new valve stem and install it for peace of mind. It may be torn where you can't see it. Mix soapy water in a small glass. Dip an old toothbrush or a cotton swab in the water and pour it around the stem. Then, pull and hold the stem in the north, east, south, etc directions and see if a bubble occurs. That's the torn area.

If you do ride it, it pops out and the tire deflates, slam the throttle open, whereas the more centrifugal force causing the tire to grow. the more stable.

I've never had this problem either. However, the Kurvygirl.com 83* valve stems I use come with a rubber seal and Lock-Tite. I suppose that is to both hold a good seal and maybe prevent twisting from heavy handed use of an air tool. The the angled valve stems are a bit of a lever!

I think skewed is saying his valve stem core was sticking out too far.

Is it the valve stem???? If so, replace it before you ride. LOL YES running at speed WILL keep your tire up and I have done it with a flat on the rear. That was a nail in the tire not a broken valve stem but it was flat as a pancake. Handled a little squirrelly but the rim was untouched. I rode 75 miles that way. another 100 stopping to fill. An immediate evacuation of all air would be a surprise. If the bead doesn't let go, I think you'd stay up but do you want to be the test animal?

Yes, it was the valve stem core (that little needle looking object) that had worked itself loose. I checked the air this morning and it had not lost a pound. So far, so good.
