Mushy front brakes
07/07/17 7:30 AM

The front brakes on my 2007 ZX-14 have become very mushy. I need to pull the brake lever almost to the handlebar before they take hold and start to work. The position that the little dial is set on the brake lever makes no difference. The brake fluid level looks OK.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks. -bg

If you already tried bleeding the whole system, I'd drain it and start over with a brand new bottle of brake fluid. If that doesn't work, get new lines on there.

After 10 yrs could be master cylinder internal seals leaking or shot. If nothing improves after bleeding I would probably rebuild MC.

I recently priced all the rubber parts that should be replaced on front and rear brakes. Was about $300 not including brake lines. Partzilla.

This happened on my sons 2005 ZX-6 this year. I bled the brakes and a couple of days later the lever went all the way back to the bars. He bought a master cylinder kit from Kawasaki for the front brakes (piston, spring, seals) for $52. I installed it a couple of months ago and the brakes have been working great.

I just got my oem rotors back a few days ago from having them resurfaced. For the price of cheapo replacements of dubious quality I have a piece of mind and that factory fresh feeling when that initial bite takes hold. If you are going to rebuild the MC and calipers you will want this too.

As others suggested, bleed/replace the fluid first. If the spongy feel is still there, rebuild the MC.

Same thing here on my '06 BG, except no mushiness, brake lever just comes closer to the grip than I like, I am maxed out on the adjustment.

Suzy, more details on the rotor resurface pls?? Did they grind it flat to the bolt interface to remove any warping? I was not aware that bike rotors were re-surfaceable(sp) good to know, where or whom did you send them to?

cruderudy I got this done at a machine shop in MI who specializes in turning motorcycle rotors. They were skimmed on the swept area to remove any warping and to provide a fresh surface. When I sent them in they both were at just slightly over 5mm and now they are at 4.8mm well above the 4.5mm limit. Its a whole new machine now with my EBC HH's. No hint whatsoever of pulsing or ANY noise . The scratches you see going against the grain in the picture is just lint from me wiping them down. If you do this and want to reuse your pads get some 80 grit sand paper and sand in a circular motion on a flat surface until you see fresh pad material. Total cost was about 145.00 which included shipping both ways. Turn around was about 5-6 days due the the 4th holiday. Here is his website https://www.truedisk.net/

Thanks suzy, I've had a slight lever pulse when slowing down for years on my 14 but just kind of ignore it. I may send my rotors into these guys and have them resurfaced.
