1st ZX14R service requiring fairing removal?
08/14/12 1:00 PM

I would like to know what's the first service on my cycle (2012 ZX14R) that will require me to remove fairing bits?

Is it the air filter replacement?

1st service doesn't require air filter replacement. Where are you reading that? unless you meant oil filter, and it doesn't need them removed for that either. BUT, make sure you have the cup style filter tool, that fits over the bottom of the filter. Mine was SOOOO tight, that I had to basically rip a hole in it, and then fold that into a flat that I could chisel on with a punch to get it to turn, and then remove.

Either the dealer, or the factory had it on wayyyy to tight.

I'm not familiar with this tool you write about. Got a p/n for it? I'll look it up... Or, point me at a thread that discusses it. Thanks!

Anyone, is this typical "tight-ness" for fit on the air filter removal? I've been into alot of air boxes <ahem>, never encountered anything matching this description...

@skillz:

That's kind of you, thanks for the offer. I do most of my own wrenching... I've read / re-read the fairing removal thread now, not quite as daunting as I first thought, thanks to the pros (and their very fine how-to's) on this site. I stand on their broad shoulders...

This is the example of the cup style filter tool.

should be 65mm end size.

I think its the same oil filter diameter as a mazda mx6

@Kolka:

Thanks, Kolfa. You're right, I should study the SM (No, not study SM, lol) before asking questions that it would answer.

I think Grn understood my question best, and gave the reply I was looking to obtain. I'll need to remove fairing bits to get to the air filter, and that's likely the 1st reason to be under them (the fairing bits).

yeah, sorry for the confusion. are we talking about oil or air filter for the service?

again, if this is the 1st service; why are you changing the air filter? its not needed yet.

See the title:

"1st ZX14R service *****requiring fairing removal?*****"

Grn identified the air filter as the 1st service requiring fairing removal.

It's not needeing replacement for the very 1st service, and it's not what I asked (or intended to ask, anyway).

I'm a bit shy about the fairing removal process, it's why I asked what might take me underneath it for the 1st time: air filter replacement.

Thanks for looking out for me...

DOH! I get it, lol. now I see how that got brought up. it wasn't a question of fairing removal at the time of the 1st service; it was the 1st service requiring fairing removal, OR when the air filter is needed to be replaced. Sorry for my misunderstanding.

I still say get the oil filter tool I linked. OR use a K+N 303, they have a nut welded on the end, so you can fit a socket on. that way it will for sure come loose easily. but I suspect I wont have a problem again, since I'M the one who will be tightening the filters from now on.
