Should I get a reflashed ECU
06/05/18 10:34 AM

Have a stock 2013 ZX14r with 3,500 miles. I am keeping the stock exhaust on it, no engine mods. Would there be any performance gain by getting a ECU reflash ? Thanks.

Maybe a small bit of torque and hp gain but if you're not on a track or strip i doubt you would even notice it

Thanks for the reply. If it was 4hp and 3 ft.lbs. of torque I would do it. Schitz Racing has an inexpensive reflash. I will need to read up on it some more.

Yes, you can do the Schnitz flash for $75.00

Increased Rev Limiter to 11,500 RPM (+500rpm from stock)

Top Speed Limiter Removed

Secondary Fly's will open more aggressively to give noticeable power gains below 5,000 RPM

Traction Control Set to Retain Last Setting (also can change on the fly)

Safety Mode Completely Disabled to Prevent Power Loss Under Hard Acceleration

Radiator Fans Set to come on at 194 (vs stock 204)

Fuel cut on decel removed.

I like all of those changes except the 500 rpm increase in the rev limiter since with the stock pipe it's not needed. Maybe I can ask to not change the rev limiter. Do you think there will be any hp / torque change other than below 5,0000 rpm ?

According to Schnitz.....

No idea if that's the flash with or without the trims.

I wouldn't worry about the +500 rpm, looks like you should be shifting at 10k anyway.

If you are going to get that precise about what you want and how much performance
you are trying to tweak, then a custom tune sounds like something you want to consider.

Must be quite a few good riders around here, I personally can ride this bike pretty hard and
have yet to say to myself, man.... I could use an extra 4-5hp.

The only real reason I got the flash was the aftermarket Yoshi cans. Just didn't like the idea that the bike could be running lean with the higher flow cans and w/o two Cats. No way I'm capable of driving the bike at max on a sustainable basis even on the track.

IMHO, if you want to get out and do straightline speed as fast as you can go, you want to do that in as little time/space as possible. I'll always take more hp. It just depends on how much it costs to get it and how complicated it is to do myself. Some people go for porting and polishing this and that and it costs a zillion $ and gains 5 hp. That's for competitive racers.

Yes, had them do my 2012. Well worth the $75.

Schnitz has been flashing ECU's for a long time.

Schnitz is the way to go. You will notice a marked difference.

Flash is a must do upgrade on the 14R. The first few gears are so restricted in power it is unbelievable.

I went with Ivan's flash and the drivability at all RPM and throttle openings is hugely improved.

Not a cheap as basic schnits but they do not give you much for the $75 flash. The $200 flash offers much better tuning.

Currently I have a 2006 14 and 2012 14r, they both have the Schlitz ECU flash. I'm happy with both. I don't however race on the straight or twisted tracks, just a little on the street. Within 50 miles we have a mile run we can use in the summer during week days, it's at 9,000 feet! I haven't been able to run it since the flashes, but I'm sure I will do better this coming year summer.

In total I've had 3 ZX14's and all three, as stock, have been smoother on the throttle than any of the other 50 or so bikes I have owned. The flash made them even smoother. I cruise in around 3,500 to 4,000 rpm and when I want to make a quick out and in pass I usually downshift to 5th, but after the flash, I can just twist the throttle staying in 6th to do a quick pass without alarming on coming traffic, so I appreciate the early opening flies.

On the 2006 with 4:1 carbon Yosh, I went with just the $75 flash as the fuel map in the PCIII was satisfactory to me and I am happy with that setup. On the 2012 14r I went with the flash and fuel map to match the Two Brothers carbon slipon's. No PC on this bike, and the combination flash and fuel map seems fine to me.

If I was racing or going for better high end I would do the Ivan's and a PC at the very least, but I just don't have a need for that much and if I had it, would very seldom use it. I run against kids with R6's, R1's and Aprilia, they all run out of steam at 9K feet way before I do, so I just don't have a use for the expensive performance upgrades.

Best Regards.......George

jayzx9, I sold my 2012 ZX14R and returned it to stock and still have the original ecu with Ivan's Performance latest flash. It is a complete assembly with the rubber mount and 3 relays. ECU number is 21175-0714.
I also had R77 slip ons on my bike and its a perfect combination.
I'll sell the complete assembly for the price of Ivan's flash, $350.00 + shipping.
Get in touch with me if you're interested.
Hank
