MIXING TIRES
05/04/19 12:10 PM

I have the angle GT's on. The front is my 1st the rear is my second. The front may have about 1,000 miles left, compared to the rear which is about 4,000. I bought a set of Dunlop Roadsmart 3's @ a super deal.

So, my question is could Run the Roadsmart front with the GT rear???? How will this effect the handling of the bike, or will I notice very little if any difference

Thanks
Bbird

I did this once too. Trying to save a few bucks but never again. I always change both, you dont notice it but the front is shot too but just dosent look like it.

Just my worthless opinion though, if its just for cruzing or touring probably wont matter but if you are trying to get the handling back change both

I concur with crude. Ask yourself if you'd throw it into a turn with one fresh one worn tire. I did swap fresh mixed brands. It felt weird. Once I ran same brand front and rear, there was a big difference how the input was-like,'oh, that's how it's suppose to ride.'

I'd say only under circumstances where you are observing the strictest economy. I have done this recently because Pirellis are so expensive and I can get two rears out of every one front. I have done some hard cornering with a half used up Super Corsa front and a brand new Super Corsa rear. It wasn't bad. I only ride hard in very good conditions when the air is 80°+ F.

The other side of the coin is that you should have optimum traction with a new front and somewhat less than optimum with a used front. Motorcycle tires are usually designed to offer more traction in front than in the rear so if one end lets go, it's the rear end swinging out. If the front slides, you are going in a different direction and pretty much out of control. SO why defeat the purpose of all the safety engineered into a set of tires?

Also, new tires feel so great, it is a shame to only have the rear running as smooth as it can get.

SO if you're short on $$, give the half used front a second time. If you can afford both front and rear, do it and enjoy the bike at it's best.

I read this as front was shot and wants to replace with different brand tire on
the front then the rear that still has lots of thread.

My personal feeling is I don't like to mix brands of tires, although
people do.

Profiles from a set of tires are made to work together.

I would just change the set out for the new set of tires.

I guess if you are just commuting or putt'n around probably won't
make much of a difference

Uh, I guess I have a different experience. I've been mixing tire brands for years. I used different brands when I was racing. I found different brands offered things that worked depending on which tire I used.
On the ZX I have used almost everything. Even used to run Tomahawk recaps. All worked well on the street. At street pace most people can't even use a Shinko to it's potential.
So, to each his own. If you mix brands, it doesn't mean you're automatically going to fly off the road.

I've toyed with the idea of using a soft, supersport-type tire on the front and a 2-compound ST tire on the rear, but never came to a conclusion about which ones to use. Anyone tried this?

I think to find a soft front you'll be looking at a track orientated tire.
Track orientated tire is going to have a sharper profile for quicker turn in's

Street ST tire will be a more rounded profile

I'd want a rear that's designed to work with the sharper front profile.

Maybe the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa's

The Street/Track version "SP" and the DOT racing version "SC"
I believe the have the same profiles.

You could do the "SP" rear which has a dual compound with the side
compound equal to the "SC2" compund

Then you could do the DOT Racing SC1 compound for the front tire.

Pricey but the Diablo's are great tires.

I've used the SP's and the Diablo slicks.

SC1 front and SP rear would be a awesome combination.

You might want to have a look at the Bridgestone Battlax RS10 as a cheaper alternative to the Super Corsas. Check Dennis Kirk or Rocky Mountain ATV for the best price.

RS10s sure look the part. I've been told they are as good or almost as good as Super Corsas. I will be trying RS10s next. There won't be the choices of compounds with RS10s though.

I think the RS10 will be my next choice also, rumor/report is they stick like the supercosras and last a bit longer and cost less

They definitely cost less.

Our Buddy Kruz (the guy with all the bikes) uses them almost exclusively now.

I just had a similar situation. My Michelin Pilot 2 rear somehow got 15,000 miles and still wasn't quite at the wear bars. Front the same thing but maybe 2,000 miles to go? I considered changing only the rear but decided against that. In your case, at 1,000 miles remaining, it isn't worth it. Peace of mind is a nice feeling when you're on a bike that can go as fast as the 14. I'll choose peace of mind over being frugal every time.
PS: The Michelin Road Pilot 2 has become the "5" now. Supposed to be even better at everything. The installer even said the 5's will get even better mileage. So, maybe 16,000+ in my case? Happy.
