Brake/clutch lever install
12/10/16 1:52 PM

Good morning/afternoon/evening.

I'm a newb to the forum, but was looking for some help. I have a 2016 zx14 with about 4k miles on it. I decided to purchase some shorty levers. After trying to install them, I haven't a hell of time getting the stock brake lever off. I removed the 10 mm nut and it exposed the bolt but I can't push it out to allow the lever to free itself. Any suggestions?

Does that bolt have a slot in the head? I think it needs to be screwed out, not just pushed out.

Negative. The clutch side does have a slotted head to remove that bolt. However, the brake side does not.
Bit confused to be honest

there is supposed to be a nut on the underside of the perch. threads onto pivot bolt. sometimes falls off but pivot bolt is also threaded into perch. sorta a backup nut.

Apologize for lack of pics on this. I am updating right now so you can see what you need to do. Perhaps your clutch lever locknut fell off. brake lock nut is still on.

Got the pics updated. check out step 1. use screwdriver on top and wrench on bottom. bet that nut is still on there like it should be. replace the nut for the clutch lever. I lost mine last time i checked. Let me know if I nailed it.

*update*

I was able to get the brake lever off this time only to find that the aftermarket set doesn't fit in the perch. But I believe you solved the problem so thanks. The brake side stock lever has a 4 allen head on the top side. I really didn't even notice it until I read this thread again and saw the photo, and you can see the hex shape. However the clutch side, has a slotted head for a flat screwdriver.

..... Now to exchange levers. Thanks agian

If the lever does not seem to fit, it could be that the fluid pressure has forced the push rod out of the master cylinder. With no lever in the perch, there's nothing to stop the push rod from moving forward. I would try the OEM lever and see if it also seems to "not fit." I know I had to finagle my Pazzo clutch lever a bit to get it to go in the perch. ...then again, I had problems with that lever from day 1. I felt a click in the lever. Ended up taking it off and found the bushing was stuck and there was a lot of wear to the push rod end and the lever and bushing. I might give Pazzo one more shot because most people seem to like them.

That brake is the Brembo MC, maybe the lever is fixed in the unit?

I have this problem with my '16. The Brembo MC doesn't accept the same brake lever as the standard Kawasaki MC.

I'm sure I have seen aftermarket levers for Brembo. The perch has to be different. Brembo wouldn't make a special perch to match the ZX-14 lever. If the Brembo MC is a stock part on the 14R, Kaw must have made a stock lever to fit it. Check your brand of aftermarket lever for a Brembo fit.
