Spring rates and suspension upgrades
08/01/17 11:19 AM

I've got a Penske shock and Axxion cartridges left over from my Bandit I might as well fit to my 14R since it will only cost around $500.

I weigh 160 and have removed 40ish pounds from the bike. I'm thinking 1.0's for the front and 550lb spring in the rear which are both slightly stiffer if not the same rates as stock. Seems like it rides so well now but as soon as I hit a bumpy corner leaned over the bike gets pretty unhappy. I'm actually even wondering if I'll notice that much of a difference being that the stock rates are so close to my weight.

All the springs do is allow the sag to be set/adjusted into the middle of the dynamic range of the suspension. Damping and compression then need to be dialed in depending on your riding style, i.e. track days vs. comfy cruising are very different settings.

Are the stock springs adequate for 160lbs? Traxxion is recommending 1.10's and 600 in the rear.

For the Gen 1 yes, for the Gen 2 I believe they maybe, but not sure, a bit strong. I'm 200, 215 in gear and the '14 BBWs springs are just right for me. Racetech also has an online spring rate calculator

Race Tech recommends pretty close (or close) enough to stock. Not sure why Traxxion want to go so much stiffer.

I already feel in top of this bike I don't want to go any higher.

Have you set the sag to 30-35mm with full gear?

Unless you are in the top of the mid-group at track days the stock springs are probably going to be OK for your mass. I would suggest a track day and/or spending the ~$60 to have the suspension guy work with your bike and you as you ride. If its dialed in the 14R is a sweet ride, if its a bit off in comp/damp it can be distracting and work to turn instead of the bike falling into turns, if its set up wrong it can be dangerous. If you PM me I can send you my settings for reference but they would be different for your mass and riding style. There are utube vids of a Kawi guy setting up a G1 for a fat ass but the vid is good and you will understand what and how you can approach it

Yes I'm right between 30-35mm. Normally this kind of set up from traxxion would be $2000, so it comes set up pretty darn good. Good to know there's a lot of potential in this bike. Is stock trim I couldn't dream of flicking it around like my Blackbird. I'm hoping that raising the rear and dropping the front will also get it turning and falling into corners as you say a lot better.
