Steering stem noises
08/16/17 9:14 AM

I noticed a noise coming from my steering stem when I apply front brake and push the bike forward and backward. It sounds like an old door, creeking. So I have tightened the two locking nuts beneath the steering mount and sprayed lube into the bearing then tightened the top steering nut, but noises persist. I have searched this problem in the previous threads, but did not find similar problem. Maybe my search query was inaccurate, IDK.

Are you sure it's at the steering stem?It might be down at the pads/calipers...the noise travelling up the forks to the triple tree. You could lift the frontend, and recheck the steering play.See if it makes any noise with the load off.

I know I had a 'knock' that sounded just like it was coming from the bearings up there. It actually was the pads moving in the calipers when I applied brakes while moving it in the garage.

Yeah, my pads always make a light groan when I roll the bike in the garage. If you've never had that, I could see how you might think it was the steering stem. Noisy brake pads is such a common problem on the 14 that the steering stem never even crossed my mind. Mine is a steady groan though.

Steering head bearings are sealed, so unless you pull the triple clamps, there's no way to lube them. I'm replacing mine this winter as they are starting to feel a bit loose. I'd be willing to bet they are dry as a bone in the desert.

Front end steering bearings need to be repacked every 7,500 miles. I've done it to every bike since. When was the last time it was done?
