Riding Boot Recommendations
07/30/18 11:19 AM

I'm looking to replace my current Alpinestars Ridge waterproof boots that I have had for around 10 years now. They have been a great boot as they are comfy, waterproof (tested several times), durable (still in good shape) and were affordable.

My only complaint about these boots are that they don't allow my feet to breath so my feet get hot and sweaty, I'll pack some other shoes with me if I'm riding somewhere and then walking around for a while just to let my feet cool down.

So... does anyone have a recommendation for a set of boots that are similar to my current ones but also have enough ventilation to allow my feel to remain dry and cool?

Here are the current boots:

am a Dainese addict, for looks, comfort & longevity
get something having Goretex blended with other materials
Goretex has breathing capability, while remaining reasonably waterproof

My Alpine ** SMX boots are the only motorcycle boots I've ever owned. They are very difficult to zip up especially when new and they definitely reduce my sensitivity to the shift lever. They are rather stiff in the ankle and toe but they get a bit better with use. They are cool enough for me. Not much worse that sneakers. As far as looks, I wouldn't want to walk around in them in public. They are comfortable enough to walk in but they squeak and they are too extreme looking for normal attire. The cankles are also quite thick.

As you probably already know, if you want something that matches normal street clothes and offers better sensitivty to foot controls, stay away from race boots. They're probably very good for protection in the event of a crash but that is primarily all they're made for.

Grn14, I believe my current boots are a size 37.5, typically I wear size 10.5-11 for shoes (depending on the manufacturer)

islandninja, thanks for the info about the goretex stuff, I didn't know that and I'll look at the Dainese boots.

Rook, I guess I never thought of the racing boots like that for looks, probably because the ones I have now are "normal enough" to not stand out. Also compared to regular shoes the shifter is MUCH more comfortable (padded?) using my riding boots, I've never had an instance where I couldn't really feel the foot controls.

These dogs are tough but no way can I feel the shiftpedal as well as sneakers. There's a plastic cover over the toe on top of the the leather. I guess that's for people who shift so much they might hurt their toe. for some reason the pic won't upload but you get the idea.

hey Nightmare, here is a pic i took today of my current Dainese boots/shoes, both made with a mix of synthetic leather-like material and Goretex fabric
back: Tempest D-Waterproof
touring boots, i find them a bit tight around the ankles, taking them off requires a bit of pulling, but they are very comfortable to wear
front: Street Darker G
for daily commuting, very comfortable too, i even climbed a small mountain with them... and relatively elegant for going to a meeting

Very cool! Thanks for posting the picture.

How are the touring boots for airflow? I'm guessing as they are waterproof they probably don't allow as much airflow through the boot.

G'Day Nightmare,
A little expensive but Alpinestars Supertech R's are my recommendation.
I have always worn these and to me they are absolutely outstanding and have never let me down.
In my opinion there is no more comfortable motorcycle riding boot you can buy...

Indonesia is my riding playground, with hot & humid weather
i can't remember having felt uncomfortable because of wet socks at the end of the day

left & right side flaps can be adjusted with velcro pads for tight fit (rain) or loose fit (shine)
i reckon the Goretex ribs on the front let enough fresh air in to get some circulation

the only issue is the effort it takes to pull the boots off... but this would probably depend on individual anatomies
the synthetic leather material behaves surprisingly well, it even accepts regular shoe polish

for me, Dainese succeeds where other brands would often have problems: the gear selector protection pad and the seal between shoe sole & shoe body... theirs last!
still, over here we get a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects when buying Dainese products, just in case...

timomasalin,

Those look like exactly what I'm looking for! How long have you had those boots for and how are they holding up? After many years my Firstgear jacket needed to be replaced and I got a Tourmaster jacket as it was almost 1/3 the price however I haven't been super thrilled with the quality of the jacket (some of the velcro is failing, some of the fabric is wearing out, zipper clasp broke within 3 years), but at 1/3 of the price I guess what should I expect? :)

I have 2 pair of SIDI ST.
One are the perforated to allow airflow.
I like these best from the SIDI line, durable with nothing to break easily.
I wear a 10 in all foot wear,, they are perfect with thin socks..and not too tight adjusted at the upper calf

I have some older full length sidi's that are great, and for around town and less serious riding (to work etc); I wear A* smx1-r vented. They are incredible comfy. I wear them all day at work.

I will never buy Alpine Stars again. I bought a pair of the SMX plus boots and the zipper broke within a yr. Tried to contact them to fix and I was told I was shit out of luck because of their 1 yr warranty. This shouldn’t have happened with what I consider an expensive purchase.

that is suprising, because I know they resole them cheap enough. or is that sidi?

in any case, a good shoe repair shop should be able to replace the zipper. not very expensively either.
