So the new 14 has a super high tech air filter? I'm guessing putting a K&N in there for re-usability purposes is out of the question. I bet they are expensive from Kawi, or is it all hype?

I'm not sold on the micron filtering ability of the reusable filters. On my 06 I only use the stock paper filter with screen on the back removed. Sure it cost 40 or so every 7000 mles roughly. In actuality though I clean old ones with a citrus cleaner. That may not be smart but the paper looks the same as a new one after cleaning. Shane on the other forum found the R lost power with filter removed. That may be because it disturbs airflow or that it flows so much that it leans out the mixture.

Screen is suppose to both stop the big chunks from hitting thru the paper pleat. The other might be standing in for a noise emissions as well. Basically, the screen was for, believe it or not, the tire lug nuts off the old 1950's kinds of NASCAR cars. For some reason, it stuck. As for the removing there of, that more smooths out the air pulse. Subtle but noticeable.

I have run my BMC race filter in mid summer when the air is probably the cleanest. Notice no performance improvement from it. An aftermarket air filter will add 1 or 2 hp at the most. Not really worth the risk of letting in particles. The ability to clean and reuse sounds nice but I would never clean and reuse an OEM filter --so why do that with an aftermarket?
Pipercross is a sheet of foam with mesh under it. Lightweight and good flow. BMC seems to be the most popular choice for aftermarket but I believe OEM is the wisest choice unless you are racing.

OEM filter all the way for me. I had a bad experience with a K&N years ago and would never go there again personally. I'd never try and clean a OEM paper filter either. They're meant to be disposable and I don't believe you can clem them sufficiently without compromising the paper filter medium.
So what's the new 'Super High Tech' filter on the 14? Is it something new on the latest 2016 spec bike?

Just an FYI be careful about Ebay listings and "OEM" products. $30 is TGTBT but I'd inspect it carefully to ensure it's truly a Kawasaki filter and not either a fake or knockoff. I have seen one person on another forum buy one under these conditions and it wasn't an actual Kawasaki filter.

Another word about Ebay...depends on what you are buying but if used, you can usually get about 10% lower if the ad allow offers. Any less, they will prolly say NO. Stuff already pretty cheap on Ebay. How bad do you need it?? If you need it that bad, maybe consider buying from a reputable supplier for a little more. Then again, you will sometimes find reputable suppliers selling on Ebay.

I went ahead and bought the BMC street filter. I wanted something that was reusable.

Mine came from the previous owner with a BMC. I take it out, clean it, re-oil it and put it back in once every year. Pushing 56K miles now and no issues.
I think you'd have to take three identical machines, leave the OEM in one, put a K&N in another and a BMC in the 3rd, run them to high mileage, maintaining the filters equally and then do tear down testing to see if one is superior to the other.
Advertising and anecdotal evidence are relatively meaningless.

Looks just like the one I got from a Kawasaki dealer, same number etc ...
I hear Hifiltro actually makes them for Kaw but they only have Gen 1 filters on their website ?????

Since Brock started carrying the DNA line of filters, and discontinued the BMC filters for the 2012+ zx14r; I switched my BMC street filter for a DNA. I was going in for a custom tune and wanted to have the bike tuned with what he felt was the best filter for the bike.
With the combined effects of a fuel system clean (Wynn's as recommended by Brock), the DNA filter over the BMC Street filter, and a fresh oil change of Alisyn <0 oil with Petron+ additive; I gained 10rwhp with NO tuning changes over a run made last fall on the same dyno.
I DO admit that the BMC race filter that I also have MAY have performed as good; but that filter is NOT recommended for the street. So I was reluctant to run it. The DNA filter is a street/race filter.
I understand that not all of the results are just the filter swap; but Brock had always said go with the OEM with the screen removed. And then this one came out. I like the fact that its reuseable, so if you want a filter that may be better than oem that is reuseable; try the DNA.

[quote]Stay with OEM. Pull the metal screen./quote]
Does the filter really flow that much more air with the metal screen removed?
Even if it does, which I doubt personally, I wouldn't advise removing it if you do much wet weather riding. I think that, as the screen is on the downstream side, it is there to support the paper filter. After a long motorway ride in torrential rain I checked my filter and it was quite wet. Didn't seem to affect performance to any degree or the filtration but wet paper is bound to lose some strength/stiffness, hence the screen. Not seen anything to confirm this, just my theory. It obviously dries out pretty quickly while riding in dry conditions though.
