The Progressive Idea of the Day
02/18/17 2:48 PM

Words of wisdom from the leadership of Progressive Intelligentsia:

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and world’s richest man, said in an interview Friday that robots that steal human jobs should pay their fair share of taxes.

“Right now, the human worker who does, say, $50,000 worth of work in a factory, that income is taxed and you get income tax, Social Security tax, all those things,” he said. “If a robot comes in to do the same thing, you’d think that we’d tax the robot at a similar level.”

Gates made the remark during an interview with Quartz. He said robot taxes could help fund projects like caring for the elderly or working with children in school. Quartz reported that European Union lawmakers considered a proposal to tax robots in the past. The law was rejected.

Recode, citing a McKinsey report, said that 50 percent of jobs performed by humans are vulnerable to robots, which could result in the loss of about $2.7 trillion in the U.S. alone.

“Exactly how you’d do it, measure it, you know, it’s interesting for people to start talking about now,” Gates said. “Some of it can come on the profits that are generated by the labor-saving efficiency there. Some of it can come directly in some type of robot tax. I don’t think the robot companies are going to be outraged that there might be a tax. It’s OK.”

Last month, Gates told FOX Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo that he is excited to work with President Trump and his administration, especially when it comes to the U.S. government’s support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization he said.

“How we continue that type of outreach and how it helps our security that we are helping those countries to be healthy and be stable,” he said. “There will be some great conversations and be some ideas about new investments that can be made.”

i still think we're a long way off from robots filling 50% of US jobs. As we progress toward that day, there will have to be some kind of plan to replace all aspects of work so that they are fulfilled by the robots. If 50% od us aren't earning a living, we won't be paying for anything the robots produce.

I think people are going to merge with robots. It will be the norm to be half organic/half synthetic in the future. It is already happening. Oddly enough, I believe it will be our brains that become mechanized before other body parts.

I love where a man as smart as Gates says

robots that steal human jobs should pay their fair share of taxes.
, now that's the level of progressive thinking that will bring change we can believe in. Like CA legislating 10% of the cars sold have to be electric before they realised what to do about the reduction in gas tax.

Really.... this coming from the guy that runs one of the biggest tax dodging companies in the world only
second to GE.

Microsoft through using offshore subsidiaries and "inversions" to avoid paying taxes has stiffed
the US tax system for something like 30+ billion dollars. Currently holding over 90+ billion offshore
to avoid taxes.

These "inversions" as tax shelters are costing the US 100's of billions a year in tax revenue while
the companies sit on billions of dollars they don't know what to do with.

And he has the balls to talk about paying fair share of taxes.

Instead of downgrading the corporations that take advantage of tax shelters, you should be more concerned with the politicians that set them up and refuse to change their sweetheart deals. Go back to Ronny Rayguns and see how the skids were greased for the wealthy to get wealthier. Offshoring wealth for the purposes of tax-dodging is just one of the many screwings ordinary people are taking to support the rich.
