Hello again.
Just noticed that my fuel range on the dashboard is all over the place, it jumps for 50 miles to 70 to 100 and back to 60 and so on while I ride the bike making it very unreliable.
The fill bar on the right side shows the amount correctly but the number distance to empty is totally jumping around.
Any idea on what's going on? Is it supposed to do that?

I have no clue. Slosh wise, let the tank settle so the float remains stationary. Turn the key on and now, does the range remain constant or do the number still fluctuate? I'm trying to figure out if the float level sends the range all over the place if remains steady.

i haven't looked at anything but voltage in years but I do recall there being one mode that had to do with mileage and it changed with varying throttle inputs. During engine braking it went to 333 or something like that. Now I think it was AVERAGE that did that. could this be related in some way? You don't have it on AVERAGE thinking you have it on Range, do you?

It's on 'current'.Changes every 5 seconds.

It's set on range.

My range does the same thing. It depends on how you are riding.

I would think that the computer calculates your range based on fuel consumption rate and updates the figure every few minutes. I am sure this is normal operation, at least on mine (Gen 1). The fuel side bars is what I go by but I like to keep my display on range most of the time.

I've also never paid attention to the range so I can't comment on how much mine would fluctuate. I believe ahhlou is spot on with his guess on how it is calculated.

My previous bikes didn't have a fuel gauge so I have always used my tripometer as a fuel gauge. Currently I get on average 350km/tank before the "low fuel" light comes on and I'm pretty sure I could get another 100km before running completely out of fuel. My mileage varies with riding style, but not nearly as much as you'd think +/- 20km is about the most I've seen it vary.

I've heard 40 miles highway after the light comes on. I've never tried it but I believe I went over 30 miles on E once. Not recommended if you've ever had to push a bike before. I fill up as soon as I see the light and I don't tour anymore.

Well,that's the good thing about having a 'current' set.You can see how your throttling is affecting your mileage at any given condition.Knowing that,when the guage says..E..you know how you need to apply throttle to make it. .8 gals is the reserve.Course,if one misjudges or doesn't pay attention,it could mean...a long push.No thanks.And I aint leavin my Ninja on the side of the road.Closest I've come is a tank fill of 5.7 gals.I think that was about 30 miles from the gauge saying..E.Pretty sure.Twice actually.

Good lord Grn14 that was close to empty... I'm pretty sure the tank (at least on the 08) is about 22L (5.8Gal). I've thought about strapping on a small jerry can with fuel and riding until I run out of gas but never bothered.

Typically by the time the low fuel warning comes on and I get to the gas station I've already ridden for about 30km, and I'll put about 18L of fuel into the tank, which assuming that I have a 22L take would mean I had about 4L left. My bike runs on average at 4.3L/100km so in theory I should get 100km more range when the low fuel light comes on, not that I plan on testing that on the road and is the main reason why I use the tripometer. 300km on the tripometer and its 100km to the next gas station? fill up now. :)

"Good lord Grn14 that was close to empty"..yep..surprized me a little,but I was trying to see just how low it would go before flameout.I figured it could get the 30 miles in..at something like 42 miles a gallon.
