Lower fairing removal
12/15/11 5:46 PM

Okay...First off,you remove those two rear bolts from the cover...one on the tank cover, and the one in the frame...You then remove the side cover as per the way on the other cover deal.

Now,you go to the front of the lower fairing(remove the rivet)...you need a small allen next...for thisThe front bracket. You get yer hands in there(somehow)and you loosen that allen until you can swing that bracket up and vertical...off of the fairing 'tab'(the hole deal...you'll see it.Black....be careful.DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING.If it won't swing up,loosen some more.
Now...you go here,on the midfairing..remove this bolt...and THIS one....Have a phillips with the end bent 90 degrees...you've seen em...Small,90's on both ends, one's a phillips, the other a flatip.Okay...NOW,you CAREFULLY(and gently)pull the fairing towards you and out enough to get that phillips on the screw head...it's sitting on the VERTICAL side of the fairing, attached to the midfairing there....BE CAREFUL...DO NOT PULL THAT FAIRING OUT VERY FAR.You don't want to snap those vertical slats in the midfairing. You can get your fingers in there before you start and feel where it's at.About an inch or so in,and just above the seam.Okay, you work that screw out, keep loosening till she is very loose.Watch you engine case...do not scratch that with the other end of the screwdriver. You could if you're not paying attention. You have to turn these screws in very small increments because there's really no way(that I found) to get your hands in there, and make a complete revolution with the tool.Having said that...that screw is now loose...you grasp the lower belly fairing as you did with the other model 14's,and rock the bottom out towards you.NOW....You need to go easy with it cause that rear screw is gonna want to 'catch' just a bit.Rock the fairing a little, that screw will drop out.Make sure the front is clearing the bracket and all,and fold the fairing all the way out.DONE.

Okay...now the tricky part...the install.Everything goes in reverse order here...BUT....I decided to do something my way for future ease of access.I DID NOT reinstall that rear phillips. You may think you need to.I installed the fairing, installed all bolts back in.The attachment point at that phillips is as secure as it would be with that screw in there. You have the vertical tab going in against the midfairing, and the holes line up and suck in together as they're supposed to.The tabs are in their slots. The fairing cannot go anywhere.I tried. It isn't going to vibrate or move at all once the other bolts are secure. That's the only issue with this procedure that I really found...unnecessary(IMO).I don't have a service manual yet...but something tells me those two phillips were only in there to 'make sure' nothing happened during shipping.I left them out.Trying to reinstall them is going to be a real...challenge.I'd rather not go there. They just don't appear to be doing anything that the fairing design itself is not accomplishing.

Howdy Wheelie!Bike's doing well I hope?....Likin her?

Ya,you're probably right...but I didn't really want to separate the upper cowl from the midfairing. The left cover piece and lower fairing came off much 'easier' having done the right one.Changed out my oil today...85 miles on er...filled with 10/40 full syn Motul 7100.New filter as well.I didn't see any chunks or small pieces of anything in the oil.I have a magnetic drain plug on mine...the tip was covered in this blackish colored 'sludge'...it was metal...but the goo was very very fine particles. No flakes or anything weird. So now she's all ready for Spring....can barely wait...but....ice here all over the place.I don't care HOW good the KTRC is....I aint takin her out!!!!!!!Badazz bird...I love mine...and we're just getting acquainted!New Shorai Battery.Very nice.Fired right up no prbs. Most likely be installin some Vance and Hines CS Ones on her after the first of the year...I have the set right now...but the midpipes are just a smidgen(like 1")TOO short for this new exhaust. They're gonna sell me a couple of midpipes as soon as they get some fabbed up.They've been waiting to get a hold of a 14R...now they have...so....gonna be a few weeks...

You have a real blast on your time machine there Wheelie...I'll be along shortly!

Fairings are always a hassle because they seem like they should be easy but they never are. It just takes removing them 10-12 times and then it's second nature.

Grn, is that the Shorai maintainer you have on the outside of the battery box? Does it hang on the bike or something?
