Gen2, fans faulty
12/09/21 11:55 AM

hi Admin, please let me know if the post shouldn't be here. Thanks.

I haven't met the situation before. when temp reach 100c, I found fans didn't work. I checked the fuse, yes, the 15a fans fuse blew out. I replace it with the spare. Fans back to work. couple of mins later, fuses blew out again. I found it happened when fans started to spin.

I have no idea about electronic circuits. But I can do inspect by myself. any suggestion on my fans? it looks like there is short of fans circuits. I don't know how to tell which one is fail. what should I do to check which fan is down?

Thank you for any help in advance.

There must be a connector to each fan. Disconnect fan #1 and see if fan #2 that remains connected blows the fuse. Then disconnect fan #2 and connect #1 to see if fan #1 blows a fuse. If they both blow a fuse, the short is in the main wiring harness. I hope that's not it.

Thanks, @Rook. will get some of fuses first, then to check them one by one.

You're welcome Alom. I assumed it would be a wire to the fan that was shorting and not a short in the fan itself. Looking at Hub's reply to your question which you posted on some other thread, the fan would be the likely culprit. I'd suggest hooking the faulty fan to a battery +/- to test it but I would say using a fuse in the test setup would be a must. You would melt something if there's a short without a fuse as a failsafe. It could be real dangerous without. Do outdoors, stay far away, use long wires! If the "faulty fan works in the test setup, the problem would be in the main wiring harness or some wire not a part of the fan assembly. I think you were pretty safe assuming it was the fan itself.

Cheers, mate.

I have my bike back. The technician told me the right-side fan was faulty. He unplug the connector of it. They had ordered a new fan which I need to wait for 4-5 weeks. During Xmas and New Year, I think maybe I have to wait longer. It's not acceptable without bike during holiday.

For the right-side fan, I had tried to spin it with my hand. It's hard to spin. It looked like there was something stuck in the bearing.

For the left-side fan which is still connected, I tested it only once. It worked well when the temp of the engine got 95c. But it's wiered the fan was still spinning when the temp down to 91c.

Is it possible I can ride my bike with only one fan working?

It sounds like the right hand fan motor might have burnt out from the partially stuck bearing.

Is it possible I can ride my bike with only one fan working?

Probably. If it runs cold that is better than running hot. I'd still wait until I got both fans on there again.

Interesting. This is making me wonder why is there 2 fans?

1 fan may be adequate for stop and go in summer heat?
1 fan is adequate while cruising at 30-40 (no fans really needed at highway speeds)
2 fans are necessary/beneficial for sustained romps, several minutes of high rpm/track conditions?
2 fans just a redundancy with a large motor, really a just in case 1 fails and it would be very touchy with a 1400 especially in stop and go or sustained romps?

@Rook, I have tried to ride in city. The left fan worked well. The temp can be down to 92c from 104c. But I still worry about my engine. Then I tried on high way kept running for around 30 mins. The temp was good around 89c. The fan was not activated even. Hope the fan can be delivered quickly........

If you aren't seeing an overheat warning flash on your meter unit, I doubt you could be doing any harm.

I saw the warning flash one time as the photo shown above before I noticed there was no fan working. It kept flashing when the temp over 115c. I was shocked shut down my bike immediately and wait for a while. Then I went to dealer store for inspection. I ride back home after technician helped me to unplug right fan.

do you know what kind of harm overheating would cause?

The overheat icon came on twice that I remember on my 2008 ZX-14. Once, when fairly new. I believe it was just a very hot day. The stock exhaust REALLY holds the heat in. The overheat warning came on as the bike was idling and I shut it down. The second time was also on a hot day in summer and again, the engine was running while the bike was stationary. I was learning AFR tuning and I ran the rpm slowly up to about 8000 in Neutral. The overheat warning came on and I shut the engine off. The coolant didn't overflow either time. The last time, I do remember a smell of rubber from the bike.

I do not think you need to worry about anything, especially if your coolant didn't overflow. One of the original ZX-14 issues was that it would overheat in very hot weather. I've never heard of a ZX-14 engine being damaged from getting too hot though. Of course, you're wise to avoid overheating but probably the worst thing that would happen would be the rubber parts (including gaskets) could be damaged. If you let it run at that hot of a temperature, I suppose the engine might seize or you could have severe cylinder wear. I'm sure the overheat warning is meant to warn you before there is a heat problem that could cause damage.

Overheating would blow coolant lines, blow head gaskets, burn pistons skirts, pop the radi cap to fill the rez container

I have a 2012 (the first year here in UK) and it has 2 fans. In town and traffic queues the temp climbs pretty quick, even in Winter, to an indicated 98 deg when the fans cut in. I think it would struggle to keep the temp down with only 1 fan so, personally, I wouldn't risk running without 2 fans if there was even a remote possibility of getting stuck in slow moving traffic.
