Sargent Saddle/ Rear Cowl
02/12/20 9:35 AM

I have a couple of questions I'm hoping that someone with a Sargent saddle can answer.

1. What is the issue with the rear cowl not working with the Sargent?

2. Is thre a work around that will make the rear cowl fit?

3. Difference between the Sargent for a ZX 14 and for a Concours 14? I'm presuming the foam is a bit thicker on the Concours saddle.

Don't want to drop $500 on a saddle and it not work with the cowl.

Appreciate any info.

Mike

I don't know about the Sargeant. I imagine they could make it work with a cowl. Maybe contact them.
I have a Concourse seat we use for 2-up. Have gone 1500 miles on trips and found it very comfy. Wife said it was pretty good on the passenger part too. I think I paid around $50 on ebay for it. Had to get the latches too so I could quickly switch seats.

I have the Saddlemen Tech Style on my Gen1 and the seat cowl fits it but rather tightly. Other fitment issues with that seat if you care to know but sounds like you are sent on a Sargeant.

Not necessarily set on a Sargent.

Had found a killer deal on E Bay and wanted to do some research first.

Got home from work this evening to buy it and someone beat me to it.

SHIT!!!!

I hate it when that happens!

I think the Sargent seats are more popular but I like my Saddlemen for comfort. I don't know if it would be a lot better than a Gen2 seat in that regard. The rider portion is about parallel to the ground and the edges are rounded. The memory foam top is nice. I guess the air channel under there is fine. It looks very cool when the bike isn't being ridden. The pillion seat has a gap at the back edge. They could have made the seat a bit longer. As mentioned, the top of the pillion seat was squashed against the underside of the seat cowl and made the cowl ride a little high above the tail fairings but that settled in after a while. No harm to the pillion seat from that. It was about $400 so the weight was a disappointment. It's heavier than stock.

Gap at the back edge.

Your seat looks fine to me.

I never ride 2 up and I'd always have the cowl on so the gap wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for posting that pic. I went to the Saddlemen site and they didn't have a pic of your specific seat.

I'm not dead set on a Sargent. However, I have had them on previous bikes so I know what I am getting. I've also ridden on a couple of friend's bikes that have a Sargent and liked it.

Thanks!

Same here and if I do give a ride to someone, the gap is no big deal. the seat cowl will go back on shortly. Notice how high the very back of the seat cowl is in the first pic. That was from the seat pressing up on the underside of the cowl. You can imagine the gap at the side edges of the seat cowl over the tail pods. It never showed too much on my bike because it's black. A brighter color would show it. As I mentioned before, that settled in after a few months. I had some trouble with the tail fairings rattling against the edge of the seat cowl and the Saddlemen seat actually stopped that altogether.

As far as a pic of the Saddlemen TechStyle seat for the ZX-14, I have a bunch but I can't show them at present because the site is not letting me load pics. I can show you on FB or email if you like. Looks like they still do make the seat though. This pic on Revzilla is not of the ZX-14 seat but that is what they are selling.

Thanks for the info.

No need for more pics.

I can see what you are talking about by the pics you posted already.

I'm keeping my eye out for a used alternative to the OEM seat.

I'll keep Saddlemen in the running.

I also never ride 2 up. I have had the Sargent with pod on the 14 and swapped to the 14R when i bought the BBW. Seat is great and the small bit of storage in the pod I cant live without now

Actually depends on what year zx14...2006-2011 will mostly work with sargent seat. If yo go with a gen2 seat it won't fit as the seats had a different width and contour at the back end of the seat. angle is different.

Appreciate the model year specific info.

As I want to retain my rear cowl, it sounds like the Sargent may not work.

BTW I have a 2013 model.

I've been dead set on getting a Sargent when I was ready to upgrade from the stocker and was bummed out when I heard that the rear cowl isn't compatible with the Sargent seat. So after further research I ran across a discussion on another forum of a person who mentioned that his rear cowl was installed with his Sargent seat on his 2013 14R, and then I found a u-tube video of a guy with the low version Sargent seat with the OEM cowl fitted.

I took a gamble and ordered the seat and it arrived today. I was able to get the rear cowl on after carefully maneurvering the cowl in some tight spots, and finally got the cowl to line up so I could bolt it down with the 4 bolts. Mind you, the sides have to be pulled to line up with the 2 front bolts which causes a gap on each side of the cowl. However, it's barely noticeable and worth it if you desire the Sargent seat but want to retain the rear cowl. I won't ever have to remove the rear cowl because if I do happen to do some 2-up riding I have my stock seat on standby specifically for that purpose.
