how to replace grips 2011 zx14

TOOLS
- philips head screwdriver
- flat screwdriver
- 6mm hex
- wd40

1. using the 6mm hex remove barend weights.

2. do the same for the other side.

3. for the left side bar slide the flat screwdriver under the grip as far as posible and put one pump of wd40, tiwst and pull and the grip will come right out.

4. clean all the wd40 and install new grips, most grips require grip glue to stay in place, if u have one of those put some gripglue around the inside of the grip and not on the bar as u dont want any residue that will make the grips stick to the throttle housing.

5. slide the bar in place, and if u have ones like mine tighten the screws on the bottom if u have glue let sit at least for 10 min or as recomended.

6. for the right side mine came with the accelerator tube build in, but if u have just the grip just do the same procedure on the right as u did on the left, but if urs is like mine remove the barend weight and the 2 screws holding the throttle cables casing togueter.

7. slide the cover that that covers the cables' entance to the housing, open the housing and remove the cables from the throttle tube, and slide the throttle tube w the grip out.

8. replace cables on new grip and put housing back togueter, if u need to lube ur cables this would be a good time, there is a pin on the back of ur housing that goes into a hole in the back of the handlebar, make sure u align them togheter or it wont fit anyother way.

9. put the screws back, and tighten, make sure the throttle moves freely and u r done.

hope it helps someone

i like that WD trick.. Prolly works 10x better than using brake parts cleaner. Dave Moss recomends using that to install but it didn't work at all for me. I just pulled and then rolled the OEM grips off the bar. I used plenty of dish soap and a bit of water to slide the grips on. That worked for me. The grips I have are super tight. No way I would ever consider using grip glue. They are also part aluminum which makes them a bit different to install than all rubber.

I just use my air compressor to shoot air under the rubber grips to just slide right on!

If you don't have a compressor handy, a can of air (for cleaning out computers) will work too. Also, if you use glue, put it on the throttle tube, not inside the grip. If it's inside the grip, the edge of the throttle tube will scrape it off, and you'll glue the throttle closed. I'm getting ready to try some new grips, so I'll try the WD40. Thanks for the great how to's jpzx14!

most ppl i know recomend placing glue inside the grip as the throttle tube usually goes all the way to the edge of the handlebar, and if u put it on the tube there is more chance of having residue stick to the throttle casing something u dont want, but to each theyr own, i like it this way, but if that works for u great, and post pics of the new grips, i would like to see them, wut u got?, heated would be great..!!!

Not if you have the metal/rubber combo like D-3 grips. Nothing will expand the grip under the metal sleeve part. You are stuck. I guess air might have helped. I used a large socket placed over the bar end (like a bar end weight, sorta) the tapped with a hammer. That worked great to get the grips on the last half inch or so.

I am pretty sure the only way I WILL get these puppies off is to cut through the aluminum part with a razor knife or something.

jpzx14; maybe it's the difference between soft and rigid grips like Rook pointed out. First time I put soft grips on, I rolled the leading edge back, put glue inside, and pushed it on. Next day the throttle was glued solid. Luckily grip glue isn't very strong so some acetone took it right off, but that meant getting the grip off. No need for heat here. I don't ride in the cold anymore. I'm going to Grab-On foam grips to try to tame some more vibration.

Yep mine came off easy with the help of a sharp box cutter.
