BST rims
05/19/17 6:52 AM

Hi guys, I bought a pair of BST Black Diamond rims for my kawasaki zzr 1400 2014 model. I read in the BST FAQ section the question about the weight to carry. I noticed that the wheels have been designed to carry a maximum weight of 400 kg (150 KG front and 250 KG rear. Static Load Raiting).
The problem is that I often travel with wife and luggage and normally we exceed 430 KG in total (far greater than the bearing weight of the wheels). Some of you can tell me if you have already done trips in pairs with BST and what kind of consequences I could have exceeded the limit of 400 KG

Thanks

Dario

Keep the tires at max psi. and avoid potholes and any shock loading to the rims.

I would set up two pairs of wheels and run the stock with touring/road tires when 2 up

I used to think I could do that to save wear on expensive race tires but changing rims often is a PITA.

At least I'm sure it would be. I never did it.

I found a solution. I ordered the Black Star wheels instead of black diamonds. They are more durable and have a higher static load rating. Also I required the ceramic bearings. I hope it's a useful expense for the bike

To me, lightweight wheels made my Gen1 feel less predictable when cornering hard but I got used to them after a couple years. I don't think CF wheels are going to be a touring mod that pays off but they are probably the second most important mod for sport riding, IMO.

So what is the lightest sprocket for those high performance wheels?

Probably the Aluminum Vortex.I wasn't sure it was a keeper. But found it held up really well. That was with regular chain cleaning and lubing and adjustments.Very light sprocket.

"I ordered the Black Star wheels instead of black diamonds"...yeah,you did the right thing there.I bought the other ones.I mean...fn awesome wheels.BUT,I did feel em flexing in (real)fast sweepers a bit.Ceramic bearings also.I sold em to a member here.He said one of the bearings was not okay.I never felt any issue with the bearings...everything always looked and felt fine.Since then,I only go with steel bearings.Just because.

Voretex aluminum is the lightest I'm sure. You can tell by how big the holes are. Any other aluminum sprocket will be made of the same stuff, just more of it. If you wanted anything lighter you could go to a smaller pitch with sprockets and chain but I think that is a bad and not safe enough idea to pursue.

Recently reading Rotobox is a better wheel but I don't care for the looks and the performance can't be much better ....but about the same price.

I think BST payed protection money for Rotobox to make those as ugly as they are. My god--they actually have an 8 spoke wheel! The 5 spoke looks good on the front if the bike has really big rotors but there is no covering that rear. I can't understand how they are lighter.

Ordered a set of Driven sprockets, but I still prefer Renthal design the most.. Talon sprockets look like they would be the lightest. Has anyone used Talon sprockets?

Definitely the Talons look lighter than any for the 14 but it appears Talon is only for dirt bikes.

Agree, Renthal looks the coolest. AFM is similar but without the smaller holes (I guess I could have drilled some small ones). Actually, after looking, I think the Driven might be my new fav for appearance. Pretty close to Renthal.

I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to say anything. After two really short incidental looking posts with the same link, I decided this guy must be a spammer. Shame on me if I was wrong about that. I'm not clicking the link to find out.

Hi guys, I received the BST wheels yesterday but I noticed that the rear wheel has a slight crack on the rim so I informed the company for explanations and eventually a yield. It seems incredible...anyway
Can anyone tell me the weight of the original rims on the 2014 zx14?
The BST black star weighs: 4.9 KG rear (without sprocket) and 3.5 KG front.

Thanks

"rear wheel has a slight crack on the rim"...wow.Not good.Sorry to hear that. They show guys bouncing these rims on concrete.Honestly...I'm not buyin the 'fact' that these rims can walk away from that kind of punishment damage free.

BTW...what's a 'yield'...a replacement?

So I bought a used set of Bst wheels from WildNPhx (Kirk Hand). They were listed as excellent condition.. Arrived with a flat spot on the rear, and another spot where the epoxy was worn away to expose the weave. Crush drive is worn out, it is missing the valve stem, which was glued in from the factory, and two out of three rear bearings feel like they have sand in them. For a guy who claims to have a lot of important friends he doesn't seem worried about his reputation..

Anyway.. Vortex and Driven sprockets weigh the same. Driven are hard anodized all over and retain the full sprocket thickness around the drive pins.
Vortex 41 = 510grams
Driven 41 = 510 grams
Stock 42 = 984 grams

The Ti rotor bolts that I have seem to be quite a bit too long for the Bst wheels. I'm looking at Ti Honda rear rotor bolts from ProBolts. Are there any better or cheaper options?

You can repair that spot of scrape(exposed weave)...take superglue...the one with Cyanoacrylates include methyl 2-cyanoacrylate, ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate in it.You know, the one that instantaneously bonds your fingers together and virtually refuses to release. You dab that on the weave and completely cover the spot.Let dry.You don't want to overdo it...just a light covering.

OH shit! I hope those BSTs were cheap....damn, used stuff. I just refuse to pay more than half price of new. If I get the parts and they really look as good as new I send more $$ but otherwise I'm a stingy SOB. Be warned everyone, you deal with Rook, you are not getting a good price on anything used until I see it with my own eyes. I don't expect more than half price for anything I sell either....unless I really don't want to sell it.

The 08 14 with 60,000 miles might be up for sale in a year or two and I'll be asking about $17-18,000. add another 10 grand if I get a turbo.
