Decal removal

youngninjadude how did you go about removing the ghost flames from your bike without scratching the paint up? I know the flames and the ZX-14 tag on the rear of the bike and the ninja tag/with flames on the front of the bike are all part of the same decal.

I'm pretty sure you asked this question a few months ago because i got a e-mail that said you sent me a private message about this and when i signed in to respond i couldn't figure out how to reply so sorry about that.

Well, to start off i used a razor blade and lightly cut around "ZX-14" and "Ninja" barely even cutting the decal so it wouldn't damage the paint or plastic and i left a eighth inch or so around the lettering, then just lifted a corner and started pulling. There's a technique i figured out so it wont leave sticky residue and the trick is lift a corner and pull hard at a very low angle to where it doesn't even really come off and then slowly increase the angle you pull at just enough that it is coming off slow. Sometimes the decal will tear while your doing this and just lift and keep going, there will be sticky left on the fairings in places no matter how good you are so i just used my finger to rub it until it started rolling up into little balls and coming off and also used a spray bottle with water and a sock to finish cleaning sticky residue and smears. This doesn't mess up the paint, i was tempted to use Goo-Gone to get the sticky off but i didn't want to use chemicals if i didn't have to. Whatever you do, do not try to remove the ZX14 or Ninja logo and reapply it because these decals stretch alot.

I love the way it looks without the decals and don't regret it at all. It was extremely nerve racking trying to decide if i should pull them off or not because i didn't see pictures of what it looks like without decals.

Goodluck!

I also am trying to decide if i should get my wheels painted the same black color as the bike but i just cant picture if it would look good or not, suggestions anyone?

Hands aren't as steady as they once were but I could probably manage. Thanks for the reply. I think your bike looks great without the flames. Although I like the Persimon colored rims matte black would look really good too.

I agree it looks great!!! I think black wheels would look great!!! The reason I went with the Saphire Blue and not the SE was that it had too much red going on.... I think if it would have come with black wheels it wud have changed my decision!!! The flames removed looks awesome!!! Ya no chemicals I agree, especially with the matte paint, it may shine it up!

I got rid of the gaudy red wheels on mine and think its the 2nd best mod you can do to an 08se,with the first being taking the flames. Looks good.

It has been about the journey, not the destination.

I am glad someone brought this up becuase I have been thinking about removing the Ninja stickers from the fairings. I think I am going to leave the ZX-14 on but the ninja needs to go I think. What do you all think about the factory stickers?

I may remove the blocky KAWASAKI decals from the front fairing on my '06 ZX-14.

I'll probably stick (pardon the pun) with the Ninja ZX-14 decals on the rear fender; they add a little accent and are not as blocky as the KAWASAKI decals on the front fairing.

I'm glad that my '06 did not come with the blocky KAWASAKI logo under the clearcoat on the gas tank.

To determine if you like your bike with black wheels, cover them with black tape to see what they look like blacked out.

I would go for black wheels.
The black wheels would add a little contrast.
A rear black wheel would contrast nicely with the red swingarm.

Today I removed the blocky KAWASAKI decal letters from the front fairing on my 2006 ZX-14.
I like the look WITHOUT them because their blockiness clashed with the curvaceousness of the fairing.
Without the KAWASAKI logo, the front fairing looks longer.
I will keep the Ninja ZX-14 decals on the rear fender.
They are more nicely styled and complementary.

Today I used a kevlar thread loop to remove the KAWASAKI letter decals from the front fairing on my 2006 ZX-14.
I worked the thread loop under the edges of the letters and with a consistent tension, pulled the loop completely closed which cut through the decal adhesive.
Using this thread decal removal method almost no adhesive remained on the fairing.
DO NOT PULL THE THREAD BACK AND FORTH IN A SAWING MOTION.
DOING SO WILL SLIGHTLY CUT INTO THE CLEARCOAT.
JUST SLOWLY PULL THE THREAD LOOP COMPLETELY CLOSED TO CUT THROUGH ALL THE DECAL ADHESIVE.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am going to remove the "Ninja" stickers from my front fairings this weekend. I think I will leave the "Kawasaki" on the tank and the "ZX-14" on the tail of the bike though.
