How To Loose 100 lbs from your Gen1 ZX-14

I’m currently at -75 lbs. With headlights, coolant bottle, switching to all aluminum brackets on everything and few other tricks I got up my sleeve, I will be awful close to reaching the goal of dropping 100 lbs off the fully faired big ol beast.

I will add a chapter to this thread very few days until I get the whole thing recorded. I will also post the latest weight reduction mods I do as they occur.

There is a dark side, also. The obsession with modifying has lead to install many parts that add small amounts of weight. Electronics, gauges, nitrous and the like has put a few pounds on. After I turbo this thing, I wont be surprised if most of what I lost gets put back on. In the future, I will also post a thread detailing the mods I did that added weight.

BRAKES

#1) Lightweight Rotors and Rotor Bolts
WEIGHT REDUCTION: 1 lb, 13.00 oz

Rotors may not net a big weight loss. In fact, some aftermarket rotors might actually weigh as much or more than stock.

You must have a Carrazzeria or Honda rim or to install CZ rotors.

REMOVE
OEM Front and Rear Rotors and Rotor Bolts
Total Weight: 8 lbs, 10.55 oz

INSTALL
CZ BIG 320 mm Front Brake Kit, Galfer Rear Wave Rotor and ProBolts Ti Bolts.
Total Weight: 6 lbs, 13.55 oz

CZ rotors produce an unpleasant vibration under heavy braking so regardless of weight, I will probably go with Galfers (2 lb, 12 oz/each) when I replace them.


#2) Aftermarket Brake Pads
WEIGHT REDUCTION: None

Considering they were brand new at the time of weighing, EBC HH Sintered Brake Pads were the same weight as OEM pads. Kevlar brake pads may a bit lighter.

The OEM hose clamps weigh 3.65 oz in total. They can be replaced with heat shrink bands that must be a lot lighter.

I chose a Shorai battery that is smaller and lighter than the battery Shorai recommends for the ZX-14. It has identical power specs. It requires a small sheet of plywood in the battery tray to hold it securely.

With the stock exhaust coming in at 42 pounds, you can loose over 35 lbs with some of the lighter full systems available.

REMOVE
OEM Mufflers and Header
Total weight: 39 lbs, 3.4 oz

INSTALL
Tsukigi 4-2-1 Race Exhaust, Brackets and Bolts
Total estimated weight: 12 lb, 1.5 oz

Pictured below is my busa CANNON which was about a pound heavier that the 14’s CANNON.


#2) PAIR System Elimination, Blockoff Plates Install
TOTAL WEIGHT REDUCTION: 7.05 oz

The Gen1 will operate without problems if the PAIR is removed. Go with aluminum screws on the block off plates for more weight loss.

A lightweight rear swingarm could lower weight below the spring significantly. Didn't find any numbers neither on stock or custom swingarms though...

I'm almost ready to order some BST Rapid TEKs for the Hayabusa.

I would definitely find out exactly what those swigarms weigh before ordering. For one thing, it looks like 60" is the shortest wheelbase they offer and stock WB is 58.3" Also, if it's made for drag racing, it might be made for extra strength and it seems like it would be heavier than stock. Whatever WB you order probably would be made from the same kind of tube as the longest WB they offer and the longest one might need some hefty tube. Couldn't hurt to call ask though. A member on Hayabusa.org has beautiful a CNC carved swingarm he bought from Webike Japan. He said it was stiffer than the stock swingarm but probably not much of a weight loss. I was like $4000 though. I'm sorry, I don't pay 4 grand for a part that's heavier than stock unless stock isn't going to cut it for what I use the bike for.
