14R fairing removal
11/13/13 8:33 PM

I recently traded in by '09 for a '14 and thus I have to re-learn how to remove the body panels.
Thanks for posting a link to the 14R service manual, it was very helpful. As was a web search where I found a video by Brock.

The '09 panel removal was so much easier. According to the service manual, here is what the 14R has:
lower fairing
fairing cover
middle fairing
upper fairing
inner cover
upper inner fairing
upper fairing bracket
inner fairing
fuel tank cove

Exposed bolt heads looked great to me!!!!!

I think once you get accustomed to the new style...you're gonna really like it better.I wasn't totally convinced at the first gander of the 14R...until I saw mine at the shop...then I knew...it was right(for me).And the fairing stuff...removal and installing...worrysome at first...but then....after doing stuff with her...it became much 'easier' than my 07...how things fit back up especially. No gaps...no manipulating bolt depths to get seams to fit snug.I really like the way the new styling and fitment go together....you'll see.Once you get used to how to do it.I REALLY like the use of the pushpins at particular areas.SO much easier than dealing with well nuts and such. And the design of the body panels...how they fit up together...way better than my 07 IMO.

One place you need to be especially careful of when installing is the tank cover projection into the midfairng hole tab(up and under the side cover there). You want to hold the tab from behind as you push that projection into it.A little spit on the projection will help it slip into that tab.Lots of these have been snapped off..just trying to push it together without supporting the tab with your other hand. You'll see once you do it....Has to be installed before the side cover goes back on.Also be careful when installing the side cover...the rear small rectangular tab...make sure you slide that carefully under the midfairing lip...into the small slot for it.(while lining up the rearmost bolt hole/tab).It will snap off if you don't get it into that upper small slot for it).And make sure the rubber cover is OVER the front of the sidecover tab...you can't safely slide that cover into place with that NOT on that front tab.

Never more true than on my prom night.

i just put on flush mounted smoked front blinkers and i removed the fairings on my brand new 2014 and im not the best mechanically but i was excited i did it by myself!! i really love this bike. I usually would pay someone to do it but this bike has motivated me to do it myself!!

CONGRATS! I hear that 14r is quite a puzzle when it comes to fairings. No busted tabs? You prolly can handle just about anything that comes your way if you are very careful and get advice. definitely pass on the $80 fee to have your oil changed at the dealership. Get torque wrenches and have them calibrated (or do it yourself if you have a vice). If you are a 'more is better' guy like I am, you have to be careful not to go too tight on bolts. They break, threads stretch, aluminum parts...yada-yada.

I'll reload the pics on this thread soon.
