I don't know how true the statement was that I read on the internet, but mink oil can rot the threads of the boots where they are sewn at.
I was thinking that the spray type that appears to be a silicon base would work at waterproofing. But not sure; I have no personal experience with it.

not sure what it is called, but, go to a redwing store and they have a spray or a swab on water proofer.(spell)
