Quick Question
10/05/17 2:46 PM

New to ZX ownership, former C14 owner. The Connie had an annoying habit when fuel gets down to the last bar on the fuel gauge, it provides a "low fuel" warning that flashes that warning on the multi function screen. It also renders the miles/Kms to empty range useless. You can disable the warning message but it still leaves the range to empty non functional.

A look at the ZX owners manual shows that the ZX might suffer from the same affliction. I just wanted to confirm this is fact. On my C14 I had a bypass unit that removes the low warning message and allows the range to empty fully functional. It works like a damn with no adverse effects to anything.

According to the guy that makes these little bypass units the ZX membership may not be aware of his invention.

So if someone can confirm the low fuel message problem on the ZX multi function screen and if anyone is aware of the bypass unit.

Thx

Dave

I believe what happens is that the low fuel warning alternates with the normal display but I don't know how that effects the range because I never use that. I don't let the fuel get that low ever. Mine's a Gen1 so might be dif than Gen2.

There's a fella in the US that created a unit that plugs into the electrical line that deals with the multi function screen and the fuel tank/gauge (you can tell I'm a real electrical guru!). You simply separate the electrical connection, plug in his bypass unit in line, reconnect and that's it. I've been using his bypass on my C14 for years it works flawlessly. Once installed when the tank gets down to the last bar on the gauge it eliminates the low fuel warning totally and allows the use of the "range to empty" function of the multi function screen. If there is a downside, if you can consider it as such, is you won't be getting any warnings that you're running low on fuel. For me that's not a problem as I monitor my fuel consumption as I'm riding. For those that require a warning then this isn't for you. Once when I was riding my C14 on a long distance trip I ran the range to empty down to 2 kms!

This bypass unit has been sold to those interested C14 owners for years but the ZX owners were never canvassed. I'm getting my ZX tomorrow and I'm going install the bypass unit, that I removed from my outgoing C14 and install it on the ZX. Given that the engines on the C14 and the ZX14 are the same there should be no problem with the bypass unit working. Once confirmed I'll be advising the manufacturer of the fact that his unit works in the ZX, and hopefully he'll open up sales to those interested.

If you're so inclined his website is "uncontrolled.com". FYI I'm in now way connected with this product other than as a consumer.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Dont know what ZX14 you have but I believe the Connie kept the G1 1352 motor and the 14R or G2 went went to 1441 in 2012

On the C14 the low fuel warning flashes on the screen. While it is possible to over ride the flashing message the range to empty function is disabled. Now I won't speak for everyone else but I don't really need to know/care how many miles i can go when the tank is full, but when the fuel gets low then this info becomes critical. The low warning message starts when there is just over a gallon of fuel left...that's lots really. So disabling the range to empty function when you have 30-50 miles left in the tank seems stupid.

As previously stated the engines on the zx and c14 are identical other than the c14's output is detuned compared to the zx. I found this bypass unit to be well worth the $50 and it is a quality piece of engineering...it looks like the bike manufacturer could have built it.

For those that ride the zx in urban areas or don't venture far a field then perhaps the need for this bypass unit is moot. But I like to ride longer distances and as such I prefer to know exactly what I have left in the tank and how far that will get me.

yes 2010 is the G1. Any chance you know of a hack that converts the display into one big speedo?

You can get an HM race dash. I don't think you would have any range to worry about anymore.

Disabling low fuel warning/range indicate makes sense on a highway bike like a Connie. Although they have their similarities, it doesn't quite make as much sense for a zx14.

..all depends on what you are using the bike for. I heard the Gen 1 will go about 40 miles after the LOW FUEL warning comes up. I have used the odo to estimate range in that situation once or twice. I'm not sure I would trust the range reading 100% with that low of fuel anyway. If you see the warning, that means "get some gas in there ASAP or you're walking."

Rook like ddfee said this little hack is basically unheard of in the zx14 community. What I would say,
indubitably my dear Watson, is the reason is self-evident.

Who knows, maybe along with CBlast flash the next big thing to have to join the Predator Racing Team is one of these little fuel hackers?

The fuel range indicator is about as accurate as potty training kid. For me, enabling the last 30-40 miles or whatever would be fucking pointless. I'd be running out of fuel ALL the time!

I appreciate the input...but I was simply looking for conformation of the idiot “low fuel” warning message, not opinions as to the “hacks” worth. I like having the range to empty vs a flashing warning. As stated i watch my fuel consumption and do not need to have a warning message flashing to let me know I need fuel.

Again thx for the input.

ddfee things like this never go undebated here. On the upside, I guess you're the one to trial this thing and see if it works! I hope it does for what you want or need it to.
