Does Laser Veil really work? Well, I can't state that for a fact, but I did buy some and applied it to my Kawasaki ZX-14R's headlight area because that is where cops will aim their laser (LIDAR) guns at a motorcycle. According to Wikipedia and many other sources, "LiDAR relies on the principle of time-of-flight of two (or more) short 905 nm wavelength (near infrared - NIR) LASER pulses. So I decided to conduct a simple test. My garage has an infrared (IR) security camera and I purposely positioned my bike towards the IR camera and took a screen shot of the security image. Notice the light area of my bike looks nearly black to the IR camera, but look how bright my SUV lights look even though they are not pointed towards the IR light source.

In addition, at night the Laser Veil coated lights look very similar to bluish HID lights, so you can keep your bright lights on because most drivers now are conditioned to know that most HID lights are bluish in color and they just have to put up with the extra bright lights.

This is not scientific proof, but how can you go wrong since a can of Laser Veil is relatively cheap. My bike also has a V1 radar/laser detector and it would go off if a cop was trying to shoot me with a LIDAR gun. This is a no-brainer for me.

After thinking about this, what we want is a narrow block filter, "a notch" filter, in the correct wavelength.

Nothing else will work. That's my .02.

Dimming the intensity of the inbound and returned signal (in and out from the reflector in the headlight) is probably not going to be enough "defeat" for the detection of the returned signal.

My credentials for my opinion is, I've hand built ruby pulse lasers, and I've performed holography type photography.

My point: I know something about lasers.

By trade I'm a computer programmer and one of my hobbies is programming on the micro-chip level on a platform referred to as the "Basic Stamp". I've created sonar devices that operate with pin-point precision, but I must admit I'm just a novice when it comes to laser technology. Of course it would not be flawless, but I could see how it might give you a few seconds to hard brake when your laser detector goes off while the cop is trying to shoot you with the LIDAR gun. I'll probably eventually shell out another $500 for a laser jammer but I bought this can of laser veil from Ebay for $79.

I use LIDAR on a daily basis. LIDAR detectors are 100% useless because there is virtually no "overspray" for lack of a better term due to the precision of the beam. The beam is only three feet wide at a distance of 1000 feet. If your LIDAR detector goes off its because the unit already has your speed. LIDAR works best when the beam is aimed at something reflective. There is not much reflective on the front of our bikes. The projectors don't offer much reflection in Stock form and you will have to be at a fairly close range for the unit to pick you up. At that point the film won't matter. Most departments have policies that do not allow pursuit of bikes unless the operator committed a very serious crime and poses a threat to the public if not apprehended, so keep that in mind ??

I'm on the east coast, North East specifically and your roads are even bigger than ours. My guess is most CHP are using LIDAR because radar is almost useless on your packed highways. Like I posted previously if your LIDAR detector goes off the only thing it's indicating is the fact the trooper already has your speed. Out my way our air ship is rarely up so with our no pursuit policy it's easy to get away but out your way it seems like there's always someone in the sky.

It's going to be very difficult to pick up our bike but you don't need a speed measuring device to get pulled over anyways. If it looks fast enough the lights can go on. I wish I had an easy answer to prevent getting picked off on the bike.

Since LIDAR uses a return reflection to calculate velocity it seems a "laser absorbing" surface treatment is warranted.
