Wondering?
04/14/17 4:01 PM

Well guys,
Spring is here(long time coming!). Did a short drive the other day and a longer one today. Changed the oil and after letting it sit a bit in my tub.....WOW!! That is quite a bit of metal. Fresh oil and filter before I put it away in October. Fresh oil and filter today...going to wait a bit for next oil change. Sticking with mineral oil until I no longer see metal....say about another 1,000 km's(600 miles).
Over the winter I was looking at the service manual and wondered if lowering the engine in the frame is a feasible way of doing the spark plugs? Anyone tried this? 2016 ZX14R SE. I am going to have to do them sooner or later and not looking forward to it.
Chime in with your experiences!!!
Ross

Oh you guys and your zany oil change thing...

IMO wouldn't be any where near worth going to that extent. Plugs are pain to change but really no worse that odl SBC's with headers.

they're not THAT hard to get to!Git in there and unplug those stick coils. You can use a LONG shank flattip driver to GENTLY apply some upward force under the plug in as you TURN the stick coils.GENTLY mind you.Make sure you're turning the coil back and forth while doing this.Doesn't need to move much.Put a knuckle on the plug socket.LONG extension.GENTLY again, turn plug.Making sure you're 100% straight on the plug. You can see if you are.Little at a time(force)turning.Once you do the outer right plug, you'll have the hang of it.
Going in,DO NOT allow the new plug to fall out of the socket(should have some neoprene in that..I wouldn't do it any other way).If it falls, remove,CHECK GAP.Reinstall...and thread by hand threading only till it bottoms. Then gently tighten, but not overly.Till it's snug. You CAN use a piece of tubing attached to the tip,and lower it that way(and hand tighten).Be VERY cautious with the knuckle/wrench angle.watch it closely that it's angling in straight on the final snugging.I'd do this on a warm engine.

Rook probably has a how-to on here somewhere. His is an 06.Little more room on that model.I would SERIOUSLY NOT consider dropping the motor.Make sure your stick coil plugs are MATCHING with the correct plug.I'd mark those if this is your first go.

I'd change the plugs after 8000 miles or whatever the service interval is but if you wait, you're not going to miss out anything special. I changed mine at about 48,000 miles. IMHO, the only reason to do so (assuming the engine is running good enough to not damage the plugs) is preventative maintenance. You might avoid the engine ingesting tiny bits of metal if you change more often instead of less.
