Hardwire power source for GPS
09/08/14 5:17 AM

I want to hardwire a Garmin390LM to my 2013 ZX14R. I have it mounted on a RAM stem mount, now just want to access a power source.

I don't want to wire it directly to the battery, as I'd like it to power up just when the ignition is switched on. What is a good place in the ZX14's wiring to get the power from?

I'm interested to know what other owners have done to hardwire accessories such as a GPS.

Cheers Jules.

I installed a PDM 60 (power distribution module). I have a gps, radar detector, heated jacket liner and a autocom communicator hooked up currently. It works well. Install was easy, I mounted it under my seat.

Horn wire hot side. Take a 3 prong spade connector fitting. Turns on with key. Fuse it or lose it.

Clean install.
Avoids the need to cut into the OE harness.
Turns on with key.
Is 12v compliant.
Is easy accy to remove when the time comes or sold with bike, etc.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I will go with the horn wire option.

Cheers Jules.

Another easy option is to parallel splice in to your running lights. After your remove the left or right panel the wiring to the running lights is easy to get to. Since all you are going to run is a GPS you won't have to worry about amp draw, plenty for just that.

I took it to my mate Andy who is a Telecoms tech (and motorcycle restorer) and he did the job for me. He decided on the right side running lights for the power source and did a really professional job - see pic below

It's all concealed nicely under the panel.View of the cockpit with Zumo 390LM in place.

I collected a few parts from radio shack and wired mine in proper with its own circuit. Used a relay for switched power. Spliced into the tag lamp as a trigger for the relay. Spent maybe $15 or so. I bought a small hobby box, euro distribution block, and a relay. Otherwise the inline fuse and all the wires and connectors I already had. Ran the wire for the gps between the tank and frame, brought the line out near the steering head alongside the clutch line.

Make certain you use the Garmin stepdown for the 350/390 or you will damage the gps.On my 2012 I have two identical plugs on is 12 volt out for my old zumo 550, the other is 5.3volt.i screwed and ran the 350 on the 12 volt out took out an internal circuit for operation off the cradle
