Help please O2sensor on 4-1 exhaust
07/15/14 1:11 PM

I have searched but can't find a clear answer. I need some info on my 2014 ZX14R/ZZR 1400 Ohlins(Europe version) I have an O2 sensor on the std exhaust. I am changing to 4-1 system. My 2009 model had no sensor on it.
1. Do I keep the sensor on the new exhaust?
2. What is the effect on a 4-1 if any?
Thanks

If you are going to have your ecu flashed along with the exhaust upgrade, the o2 sensor can be eliminated (in the flash itself, then it's not needed), if ur gonna run around with the ecu stock for awhile, just connect the o2 sensor up as normal in the the 4-1's bung, should be in the collector.

C is right on the money there. If the new exhaust doesn't have a bung there already, you can get one welded in, or you can get an O2 sensor eliminator and plug it in, then no error code. If the new exhaust has a bung, it's most likely the wrong size and you'll have to buy a thread adapter to suit. ORRRR...... just get your ECU flashed and your mind blown all at the same time.

Thanks for the info. Here is some feedback.
I have put on the new exhaust - 4-1. What I did find out is that the O2 sensor has to be put back and put as far forward (towards the headers) as possible.
I have a slight surge when idling, and a rumble when I'm decelerating. No backfire like on my 2009.
I have tried the same pair mod I did on my 2009 model which was to remove the whole set up and block the holes. This made the engine warning light come on. So I put it all back and put a marble in the pipe. This made the light go out but nothing for the rumble.
I don't have anyone reliable here in South Africa that can flash the ECU, so I'm going the PCV route this week and hopefully that will sort out the surge, not sure if it will sort out the rumbling. Or is this just something I have to live with?

Sorry untamed. I just realized I wasn't quite right with the O2 eliminator. That's only when you've replaced the factory sensor with a wideband etc. My bad. I'm not actually sure what the effect would be of not having an O2 sensor installed. Anyone?

Here in the open loop preset of no 02, the other sensor to take its place is an atmo sensor. That's the one under the seat, left side, looks like the intake air pressure sensor and those are interchangeable like the sub and throttle sensors.

APS = Atmospheric pressure sensor ~ Open loop.
02 - Atmospheric adjusting sensor ~ Closed loop.

Watt happens to a lost APS/02 signal? "We take precautions to keep the engine running safely while you take this 'check engine light' situation in for service."

The engine management now takes on a "backup" number as in what number do we live in? 14.7/1 atm/1ATMO, i.e., The Penultimate number. So if you disconnected the atmo/02 [same function] sensor, the bike goes into an "a-N method" in the upper rpm's. If say the lower band of idle to mid-range failed, [throttle position], this method would kick in on the low to mid range and that is called the "J-D method."

This will pop a code on the dash if disconnected/shorts out. So this says your input is not in analog anymore with many value inputs for said elevation, rather you are stuck with one number over and over and in a limp state with limited range = Loss of HP.

Pipe change + 02 in service = More HP
Pipe change - elimination of a sensor = Less HP or safe mode.

My 02 has to sit at the collector or the intersection of all 4 pipes so it knows the next cylinder fire is an elevation change in a gradual rise up a mountain and with height there is less air. 02 sees more fuel and cuts it down in proportion to the elevation change. The atmo sensor applies the same numbers in a way under open loop as in, I can match any sensor because electricity can be measured and now I can mimic the numbers equally if I build an 02 or APS.

If I close off a pipe with the 02's nose, I caused a restriction. If I send a hole in the collector, I have a larger opening of flow. I want my stock sensors in play or I pay detuning my computer bike.

Thanks all

Hub - it makes sense thank you. I left the O2 sensor in and just blocked the pair pipe under the air cleaner. No problems there.
Sent her in for PCV with auto tune today.
