Is the 2006 ZX14's exhaust close enough to a full exhast?
08/09/18 9:32 PM

I am looking for an exhaust and since the 06 exhaust had the cats in the muffler's, if I add slip ons then it is basically a full exhaust.....isn't it? I don't mean that a 1500 dollar header and full exhaust won't flow a little better than it but is it close enough to save the cash and spend it elsewhere on the bike? If it isn't even close then tell me so and why. I have research it a bit and can't find much about it so I am guessing that it is a flawed exhaust and everyone junks it in favor of a spendy unit.

also, where are the o2 sensors if the cats are in the muffler's?
do I need to delete them if I remove the stock muffler's and add on an after-market system like the yoshi r-77?

thanks, any help would be appreciated.
Joel

Long as the mufflers are the right diameter, yeah.Good as a full system.I think most change out because of weight. The flow difference is minimal.(except with the factory mufflers).

I don't know for sure but I know there are no race bikes with stock exhausts and if there are, they want rid of them.

If someone dynoed a bike with slipons and it made as good of hp as a full system, you bet you would find info on that all over the place. The charts say a diff of 8 hp or so.

The stock headers have cross flow pipes in them. That is one obvious difference. I don't know what it does but race headers don't have that.

You are being practical and are correct if you are thinking a full system is not going to make a day and night difference in power. It really doesn't but the bike feels more racy. I've never used slipons but unless they are very cheap, I wouldn't waste the money. Look at the difference in price compared to a good full system. Is it 30% more to have the whole thing? I always suggest going full system.

You know, tampons, slipons---which is worse? I might take the tampon.

also, where are the o2 sensors if the cats are in the muffler's?

I don't know about the Gen2 but the gen1 has no stock O2 sensor. There's atmospheric pressure and inlet air temp sensors that tell the ECU what to do for fueling adjustments.

Cat is in the header on 06-11

Cat is in the mufflers 12-15

Cat is in the header and mufflers 16+

I believe 08-11 have cats in header and in mufflers. You can cut the cat out but it would be a lot of work. It's like a roll of sheet metal and some mesh. There's a thread on here where someone did that a couple years ago.

I think the trivia goes something like this:
2006-'07... No honeycomb in header. Cats in mufflers.
2008 on ... honeycomb in header. Cats in mufflers.

2006-2015... Open loop. No 02.
2016 to Present... Closed loop. Uses 02.

Stock Muffler = Tuned to the bike's OA performance.
Open Exhaust = Good for top end, bad for low end.

Stock Muffler = Lots of Grunt.
Open Exhaust = Possible drop in HP.
e
Stay stock so the loud noise fatigue won't put you to sleep. Apply muffler money to serviceable parts like tire, oil, filters, shim kits, valve cover gaskets, etc.

nice job hub on the statistics. I wish there was a spot on the forum where members could continually update the differences between year to year models.

I guess the real question is do the headers suck in the 06? IF not then I will likely go cheap and wait until the right ebay used slip ons come around and then snatch them up. For right now I am good with the stock mufflers....I shine them weekly so that helps to not hate them. They are just a bit too big though.....almost comical.

Then trivia more like...

2006-'07... No honeycomb in header. Cats in mufflers.
2008-'11 honeycomb in header. Cats in mufflers.
2012-'15 cats in mufflers only.
2016+ went back to 3 way system header and muffs

The 06-07 has no cat in it so it's better.

You're going to want a full system. I can't feel any loss of power down low. Weight reduction is the best mod on this bike.

I know there are no race bikes with stock exhausts

i also know them race bikes don't even have baffles in their full systems

PS those baffle bikes are faster and quieter

The aftermarket exhaust industry has done one heck of a job on pulling the wool over our eyes then.
