2012 problem
06/28/15 1:17 PM

Hi all, this is my first post on this site, wondering if any of you guru's can lend a hand. i have a 2012 ZX14r with low miles and all of a sudden it has developed a surging issue at idle and low rpm in first and second gear, once im in the upper revs the bike seems fine,I took the bike to the dealer and they ran it through the diagnostics and they say everything reads OK, the tecs at kawasaki told them to change the throttle bodies which they did and still surging, so they say it may be carbon buildup and told me to run seafoam through the bike, I have ran 2 full tanks of treated gas through the bike and still the surging contines, HELP!!

Oh bad call on the bodies. They should have swapped ECU's. Bad injectors do not clean up going out of gears. Dummies! Any way you could go back to the dealer, have them swap an ECU off the showroom floor? It's not going to hurt anything tell them. If they could not figure it out, no air leak from the getgo, no injector problem once out of said gears, only other way to go is pull the green square connector, left side of bike, near or say at 10 o'clock, this side of the sprocket cover.

This defaults a possible- removes the maps in play now, brings up a single map to run off of. The oil light stays on, the gear select is locked in 6 or N; test ride and if still there = ECU???

by any chance did you just sway rear gears, like say put a 43 tooth rear sprocket on it?

Sounds like you need to find a different dealer.
I don't trust any of them. The diag can be tough, but they shouldn't send you down the road with the problem.
Fuckin' rookies.

Pull the air cleaner, clean as much as you can around the dirty side of the air cleaner area, ride the bike without the air cleaner, but install the cover back on; see if this clears up? If it gets worse, the bike is lean, if it cleans up, the bike is rich. The bike runs even better = ECU.

Does it do the surging at Idle when not in gear? Just in gear at a stop? Or low speed riding in gear 1 and 2?
At a stop in gear when it surges does bike want to move or roll forward? if so maybe clutch adjustment needed??

the bike surges in neutral and in gear, the bike also surges in first and second at low rpm's until I get to the upper revs. the bike does not try to move forward from a stop.

If it is the ecu, I'm curious how their diagnostic equipment didnt show this.

Did you do the tps (throttle position adjustment) when you installed the pc5? Try that and see if problem clears up.

What model bike do you have? California model, 49 state model, European model? Where are you located?
How many actual miles on bike? What services have been done to bike?

If it is the ecu, I'm curious how their diagnostic equipment didnt show this.

This will more show a small program, no map or a cell is possible to change, no, nothing they could detect with that equipment.

I'm holding a member's ECU that had a problem at around 3,200 rpm. Sure enough, no code, but watt an annoying signal that was. It was just stumbling away, you met X to Y. That said; no sensors were out of spec and no code displayed. The final diagnosis was change to a good known part. I assume he had no other move, but bought a new ECU and that solved that.

So this is where the dealer has no time on your bike to pinpoint the glitch. But if you know where X (rpm or mph) is, you can throttle up to Y, and if you can duplicate that over and over like this ECU could, that's where you tell the tech that is testing it; is to find Xmph and Yrpm.

I had weird surging with my 012 14 as well. Started out int he lower RPM, then later on even the higher rpm. My friend said to try disconnecting the battery for about 15 mins and retry. I did and was problem was completely solved. Been running great ever since. That was 2 years ago. Not saying it will work but always try the simplest things, and cheapest, first. Try it, not going to hurt. Electronics are a weird thing

What does disconnecting the battery for 15 mins do?

Thats electronics for you. After dealing with electronics/computers for a long time, funny what a complete reboot will do. What did it do for mine that it fixed it completely. The thing is, it doesn't cost anything and takes a few minutes.
