Can Rook use an iPhone instead of a computer?
08/04/18 11:38 PM

I never used a smartphone in my life but seems like that could be good way to forum since I'm paying for cell phone service anyway and it includes internet use whether you use it or not.

Will a smartphone get the internet anywhere or do you need a router nearby? I'm using Verizon as my provider. Is a smartphone as good at internet usage as a computer? Will it be slow? Will it cut out on me? Can I get my G-mail by smartphone? Can I store pictures on my smartphone? Will it run out of internet use if I surf too much? because I do that at least 2 hours/day and a lot more when I'm not working for a while. It seems a little more laborious but if all that works, I might just go without internet to my computer and use the phone. Can I load Word files onto the phone and copy them to the forum?

I gotta get to Verizon tomorrow before they ship my plain Jane flip phone so I can cancel that and get an iPhone. Or should I stick with the flip phone and get internet service? I don't really need both if an iPhone will do everything. I don't watch TV.

Only problem I see is my Mac won't get updates through the internet. By the time I get the internet to it again, it will need a thousand updates.

And I could run out of data or it could slow down if it's "unlimited".

Bumpfire..LOVE IT!What movie was that..I can't remember,Saving Private Ryan? One of the best scenes in the whole deal lol.

Rookster. You want that bigger capacity phone. For sure.Maybe even bigger. You can probably add storage to it as well.Possibly a thumb drive.I think so.Some areas won't have service though.WAY out there in the woods maybe. But in a city...most likely no problem. You're mechanically minded...maybe you can find a way to use your phone as a 'brain' and set up a monitor where ya live.I'm pretty sure this is doable. They both would have ports to connect to another device.Add storage, delete files you don't need in there...yeah,it'll work okay.Just add gigs or terabytes with an external drive(card or stick).Should work okay.

Come on over to the home team and jump in for the big win.these things are amazing, its an excellent resource for a teacher

Thanks guys. I went down to Verizon and sat for about 15 minutes while two other customers were waited on and there was still a couple ahead of me so I got up and left. I've been down this road before. I considered this rout about three years ago and decided to go with a simple track phone because I don't use a cell phone much with a land line. I thought it would be problematic to work on a computer if it wasn't hooked up to the internet at that time and things haven't changed much since then. I grab stuff online all the time when I'm doing things on the computer. Also, a mouse and keyboard sure beats twiddling around with my thumbs. Also, the cost of my plan would go way up...I overheard a conversation concerning rates the customer ahead of me was having. MY flip phone will cost $60/month with 12 of that going toward the cost of the phone for two years. Start adding data to that and the price will be as high or higher than paying for internet by router and I'll just have a smartphone that's less useable for internet/other programs you have on a computer. Maybe I could use an iPhone as a hotspot for my desktop computer but what if that doesn't work well? What if it get slow. I spend a lot of time online. And they might limit the amount of normal speed data they give with unlimited data.

As I sat there waiting, I talked myself out of it. If I want a smartphone, I can always get it. The flipphone only cost me $120.

But in a city...most likely no problem.

City? LOL you'd have to see Winter. It makes Calispel look like an urban jungle.

.
One of the advantages of using an iPhone is that you can have access to the forum from any location 24/7. You can also post images taken with your iPhone to any social media account instantly. If your dealings are mostly phone calls, email and text messages, the iPhone is probably all you need.

I have a hard time reading miniature screens, my eyes become fatigued, and they cause me blurred vision and headaches. Besides, there is no comparison for photo editing with Adobe Illustrator like a computer.

Rook, you can use the phone as a mobile hotspot then do everything on the Mac as you normally would. The phone account would be best served with unlimited data. I have done this multiple times with my mac or ipad tied to the iphone. Yes you pay for the service but you wont need phone+internet etc.

Yeah, I'm thinking a tablet might be the way to go to do everything a smartphone does except phone calls. Soke of the phones I saw were actually tablet sized.

Maybe I will run out to Verizon again... the only thing I fear is that the unlimited data will A) cost more than the $40/month I'll pay for regular internet B) slow down when I reach whatever limit Verizon might have for data. I've been told some companies' dat is unlimited but it gets so damn slow after you reach a certain amount of usage it's a PITA for the remainder of the month. If I decide I don't like it, I'm stuck with the $800 iPhone.

Looking at the plan I now have, it comes with 4 GB of data and the phone can be used a as hotspot but it looks like there is another fee for that. I will probably stick with the cheap phone and try Verizon's hotspot if it's cheaper than normal internet service.

How long does 4 GB of data last?

Depends on how much girl-on-girl porn you watch at work - but I heard not long enough. If you stream or download music/podcast or vids get the unlimited or at least 8 Gigs to start

Thanks, rud. That tells me being on the cheap probably won't cut it for this one. Although I doubt I'll be porn surfing at work very much, I would be using the internet pretty much at home. I'll ask about the cost of unlimited and hotspot. I have a feeling the bottom plan along with service to my computer from a internet provider is going to cost a lot less.

At home the iphone/pad connects via your wifi. If you can connect thru a work net to the WWW then you can avoid the phone data limits, but work can see what you are doing and when.

AT&T has a home hotspot device that only adds $10 to the monthly. I am sure Verizon has a comparable deal. I have heard similar things about volume of data used affecting speeds. Absolute rubbish really. It would be like slowing the fuel flow from the petroleum company because I use a lot on the highway, even though I have already paid for the gas.

Thanks GPfan. I will check with Verizon. They already shipped my flip phone so I guess that's what I'll have, I can still change the plan to hotspot and unlimited data though. If it's cheaper than regular home internet service, I'll try it.

Bummer. My flip phone can't be used as a hotspot. Unlimited data and hotspot would cost about the same or more than cell service and separate internet by wire to my home computer. I'll be getting an internet connection in my apartment.

Could have saved money going without mobile service and getting a land line and internet at home. About $88. Cell and internet at home will be $110. I guess I needed the cell hone though. The phone is cheap enough and the plan expensive enough, I can ditch them if I want and get landline only.

I got a fantastic deal going to Sprint from my carrier. You get 12 months of unlimited, talk, text, and data for taxes only, which is about 7 bucks per month. You can only use certain phones for this deal so I looked at the list of phones that work, and needed a new one anyway, so I went with a Moto E4 that I got brand new from Walmart.com for 100 bucks shipped. I added the 2 year, no deductable warranty, for 25 bucks more and put a screen saver and case on it and am a happy clam. You can do up to 4 phones on this plan so you could save thousands. I thought it was a gimick until I read an article with the Sprint CEO saying "we loose money the first year anyway so we think after the year is up that you will stay with Sprint because we offer a great service at competitive prices." It checks out and I have a super low bill for 11 more months.

Yes Rook that phone will do anything a computer can and more. I use it for GPS and a large digital speedometer since you need reading glasses to see the damn speedometer on a ZX. I also download music songs by the thousands each hour via torrents....fuck those rich singers. oh, and all that stuff is free from the google play store. Download a new music player too that has a built in volume booster and EQ. It is way better than what the phone comes with.

Joel

Thanks Joel. I can't use Sprint there though. Verizon might have ripped me off. The upstairs neighbor has a plain Verizon phone without texting and unlimited calling. $33/month. I'm paying about twice that. They said it was their cheapest plan.

I'm off to Winter for good now. Last load. You should see the truck, it looks like the Beverly Hillbillies all loaded up and crap tied on the roof! Every nook and cranny is filled and I can't see out anywhere except the windshield and drivers door window.

It might be a couple weeks before I can have normal contact with the forum but I will check in from school.

Incase anyone's wondering, I'm just busy and having a hard time participating on the forum for the past couple weeks. Hopefully that will change. The only connection to the internet I have at the time is here at school so I'm a bit reluctant to spend hours surfing the forums.

Still have not ridden the bikes. I do have a nice storage unit here for them though.
