Go pro mounting
01/05/15 1:32 PM

I got a Go pro for Christmas and I'm looking at where is the best place to mount it for best quality. ( sound is not a big issue at the moment, more video quality)
I've been trying it out and had it on the front of the bike at the bottom of the screen. It's ok but I've seen better quality videos on you tube etc. I bought a side mount and want to know if someone has experience in the difference between mounting it on the helmet or on the bike.
Which gives a more stable picture? Also would helmet mounting not cause wind resistance and cause the helmet to bounce a bit especially at higher speeds

I used a Ram stem ball mount which is intended as a handlebar mount, it comes with 3 8mm bolts and is about $11 off of Amazon. I used JB Weld and glued a bushing inside the stem to reduce it from 8mm to 6mm, got a longer 6mm stainless cap screw from the hardware store. I took out the front tank mounting bolt which is right below the steering stem and mounted the ball there. I left the rubber and metal washer in place, used the longer cap screw, tightened it down, and it's very solid. I did put a 6mm flat washer and lock washer under the screw.

Nice thing about this mounting is it's out of the way when not being used, most people who look at my bike never notice the ball mount. I have two different length Ram double-socket clamps, a 1 inch and a 2 inch, they were about $10 each from Amazon. The camera on the two inch looks thru the windshield and also captures the tach and speedo. I use the 1 inch to mount my GPS.

Probably not the best or most elegant way to mount but it's simple, out of the way, and works good for me.

You can also get a handlebar perch mount and mount on either side, they're about $11, easy to install and use.

One thing to keep in mind...any extension used will allow a vibration to occur at various speeds. You don't want that. The closer you can keep the camera mounting to the base...the better.I had on my 14 a pretty good system for keeping the cam steady on a raised extension arm. Here's a couple of pics with it....

Rktsled - that's a damn clever way of mounting it. My problem is my screen is too dark.

Grn - I'm sure I saw somewhere that you had it mounted on your bike on the side. Might have been somoene else. I can't find the thread anymore. If it was you, How did that work with vibration. did it vibrate more with a side mount on the bike than on your helmet in the front?

I see guys around with them mounted on the side of the helmet, but my worry is high speed wind resistance and pulling the helmet to the side or pushing it around.

I would like to draw on others experience before I go and waste mounting plates.

Wish I could get my pictures to post. I have used up to a 4 inch double socket Ram mount with my camera to see over the windshield, I got a little vibration from this one but not a lot. When I use the 1 or 2 inch mount I have no vibration due to the Ram ball being so solid. I tried mounting my camera on the handlebar but didn't like the movement with steering, didn't like my GPS there either, prefer to have them both I my direct line of site.

That's not a scratch on there...it's a reflection...but anyway...You see that first tine in the side fairing there...to stop any vibration...I wrap tape around the camera body and around that first tine there.I put a small foam damper between the inside camera body edge...and snug the arm into the correct position...then secure with tape...just a couple of wraps. That's all it takes...

Depending on where you want the cam to focus on....it can be set up with either the suction mount OR the adhesive mount...which I like better cause it allows a closer space to that tine for securing.Plus the addition of say...two extension arms will allow the camera to raise or lower depending. You also NEED two extensions on there...short ones modified so you can get the horizontal view flat with the road, and the camera up down angle correct. As well as how much it's aiming outward...or inward. You NEED the tape to stiffen the camera once adjusted.Secured to that tine.Vibration is ZERO.

The helmet/chin mount gets NO vibration.Plus, mounting it there will allow an extension to lower it even more...the FOV.And you can change the capture image either higher or lower(to include the dials and all.It works very nicely to get a good 'moving' perspective and the tach and such.

Couldn't find any green tape...:(

I guess I'm the only one who likes camera shake. I mean, it only happens when you hit a bump or come out of a wheelie. It ads to the visual effect, IMHO. More like the viewer is really riding the bike.

That's okay...but I don't want my videos shaking while riding...tends to get intrusive when trying to get the smoothness of the bike as it really is.I had one of those stem mounts on mine...getting the cam to stay solid and vibe free was next to impossible with that double socket arm...both lengths.Taping did not help with those.I tried.IF the mount had been one solid piece...instead of the two ball ends...it probably would have worked.

I have a TechMount steering stem mount. I think it's pretty stable. Much more so than the suction cup mount for the GpPro.

My only complaint is that it is extremely difficult to remove. If I push it all the way into the steering stem, I need to insert a dowel from below to tap the mount out with a hammer.

Maybe your Techmount IS more stable. It looks beefier than the stem mount I got.Yeah...it does look more solid for sure.Having that extension attached like yours is...makes a big difference.

here's one on the busa with an extension. I don't think it made much difference in the solidness of the mount. I also picked up a longer extension in case I needed to move the camera farther away from the gauges but I don't think it was necessary. I don't use any extension with that mount and the GoPro sees what I need to show.

Rook - on the 14 does that mount allow you to see over the screen or through it like the Hayabusa?

I don't think it will look OVER the screen. Maybe if I attach the longer extension....I think it would look over the screen if I attached both of the extensions I have. Anyway, if you wan to look over the screen, there should be a 8" extension that would do that. They make different lengths of extensions. That was the old model of techmount steering stem mount. I believe they revised the design of some of their mounts. IDK if the steering stem mount was changed but you should be able to find out on their site.

I can check the height and the view of the camera for you with both of the extensions I have if you like. It might get a bit more shaky with a longer extension.

I can't figure out how to embed youtube vids. What I used to do worked fine but something must have changed. I'v been stumped on this for the past 5 months.

here's the one I was going to embed if you want to watch at Youtube. It was done with the tech mount steering stem mount.

This is a little more exciting. It was done with the suction cup mount. A few bumps here and there but to me, that is what I feel when I ride so I have no objections.

and this was fairly mellow but shot with the Techmount.

Here's the suction cup mount on the tank. I guess it's a little more shaky.

Hey guys, jus taking a moment to chill. But I thought I'd just take a moment to share my efforts to develop a decent mount for my GoPro, as last year I just tested using a helmet mount.Hope these pics give a good conception of how this mount works. It folds away for storage so as no need for removal...theres even a second one on the right side of the bike and I'm anxious to test ride soon for vibration etc.The mounts allow me to rotate the GPro and of course the GPro mounts aid verticle/horizontal views. While I can fold the camera up and out of the way I don't really intend to do that unless necessity and then I'd cover it and strap it for extra support. Using some effective cover as shown.. I've been able to preview on my phone app and then I have the actual GP remote mounted just under the windscreen with easy access. On the mount theres a rubber tip towards the frame which helps secure and stabilize the mount and also there is a removable rubber wire tie that feeds from the mount to the bike as insurance to secure, but designed to break loose if the camera and mount get hit and needs to fold back towards the rear. You will also see I use a tether on the camera. This mount may fail miserably.....but it's been fun making! If nothing else this allowed me to use up some old spring loaded cabinet hinges I had laying around!

I don't see where this is mounted to the bike but it sure is cool! those are some great angles. It must be mounted to the accessory mount on the passenger foot peg bracket?

yep....one 8mm allen and I can drop whole thing. Its a modified cabinet spring hinge.Afraid that even with how secure it sets that vibes may be an issue still. If so I can shorten and/or run another brace to camera,,,,maybe even tie it off with another rubber tie wrap.still other things to complete before I ride but i'll update when I do.

I seem to be in the minority with my opinion about camera shake but I feel the shakiness of the suction cup mount ads a lot of excitement to sport riding videos. If your mount is only shaking when you hit a bump, I would not worry about it. I have seen people use ram ball boom mounts with the GoPro on the Hayabusa. It worked pretty good.

RE: Go pro mounting

Appreciate your input Rook. Making this allowed me to take advantage of the accessory mount and design of the frame to provide some rigidity to the mount and so I'm very anxious to try everything so as to know what will/won't produce good video results. I doubt that with my riding abilities any scraping of camera will ever be a factor. So with some simple test rides and the ability to review results on my phone I hope to make adjustments or support as I'm out sampling the results. I had hoped the turnbuckle body had been threaded to the middle at least so as to be a little more secure. Thats why I used Teflon tape on the threads. Realizing the angles I can cover at the shortened length of the turnbuckle I realize theres prob no reason to ever extend the length.Matter of fact I believe I might find me a 2-3 5/16" coupling and do a shorter version.....lol,maybe. First things first. How difficult and what max size vids can be mounted?

Nice mounting...
I picked up an Ion camera over winter - shaped like a tampon...
I hope to mount it in my Ram air vent in the front of the bike. Picking up the beast next Friday, so we'll see how that goes.
