Gas Cap Removal

Gas Cap Removal

The OEM gas cap is at least twice as heavy as aftermarket pieces. Aftermarket gas caps typically do not have a lock which makes them less secure but quicker to open and much lighter.

Tools:
4mm allen wrench
3mm allen wrench
electrical tape

Removal of OEM Gas Cap

1. Use a 4mm allen wrench to remove the two back screws and the front screw on the OEM gas tank ring (the screws are marked in green). The The other two screws are decorative and they do not secure the cap to the tank.

2. Unlock the OEM gas cap and open it. Gently separate the seal between gasket and the filler neck. The whole gas cap will come loose.

3. Remove the OEM gas cap being careful not to drop the gasket (in my palm in the pic) that seals the small hole at the back right of the gas cap.

4. Clean any debris or dust from the recess in the fuel tank where the gas cap fits being
careful not to drop any into the filler neck.

Installation of the OEM gas cap would be the reverse procedure of removal.

Installation of Aftermarket Gas Cap

I installed a LighTech 90 degree turn gas cap purchased from OPP Racing. It is about half the weight of the OEM gas cap.

5. Place the gasket onto the after market gas cap.

6. Place the aftermarket gas cap into the recess in the fuel tank holding the gas cap gasket in place with your finger.

7. Stretch a piece of electrical tape over a 3mm allen wrench so that it will not scratch the finished aftermarket gas cap bolts.

8. Hold downward pressure on the cap so that the gasket is compressed. Tighten the three gas cap bolts evenly.

Done.
