Engine Subharness

Gen1 Engine Subharness
The Engine sub harness is the small black taped wire branch that lays under the stick coil subharness. The engine sub harness connects the camshaft position sensor and the water temperature sensor to the main wiring harness as well as the clean air switch valve. The photos and copy will provide further information about engine sub harness routing. The engine sub harness needs to be removed or cleared along with the stick coil sub harness and the camshaft position sensor lead in order to remove the cylinder head cover.

It is a good idea to label each half of the leads as soon as you disconnect them. Use a marking pen and masking tape to identify the leads.

All leads are disconnected by pressing the tab down and pulling simultaneously.

Do First:
Remove the battery negative cable from the ground screw on frame (Battery Removal, steps 1, 2 and 3).

OPTIONAL: Remove the Stick Coil Subharness.

You probably can remove the engine subharness by sliding it out from under the stick coil subharness but it will be difficult to see the proper routing. In most cases (such as cylinder head cover removal), if you are removing the engine subharness, you also need to remove the other top engine wires as well.

OPTIONAL: Remove Throttle Body Assembly.

It is necessary to remove the throttle bodies in order to reach lead connector D and also to rout this lead if the engine subharness was completely removed from the motorcycle (see the picture below, Wire Identification—Right side connector leads and also steps 4 and 5 of this tutorial). Unless you are replacing the engine subharness, it is normally acceptable to clear it to the right side of the motorcycle and leave lead D connected and routed between the throttle bodies holders.

*My PAIR is permanently removed and the clean air switch valve lead lays on the engine top. The picture in step 2 shows the lead connected to the clean air switching valve. The LH fairing hanger has also been removed prior to taking this picture.

Tools
tape
marking pen
straight slot screwdriver

Removal
1. Disconnect the large black engine harness lead [B] located on the LH fairing hanger. (the fairing hanger has been removed in the photo).

Press the tab while pulling back.

2. Disconnect the white lead [P] from the clean air switch valve.

Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the slot on the tab and press down to unlock the catch. Pull the connector backward at the same time. It may be tight, but it will come out by following these procedures. You may also choose to leave it connected to the clean air switch valve and clear the harness forward after the other leads are disconnected if that suites your purposes.

Be careful that the red foam seal does not fall out and get lost. It may stick to either the male or female connector.

3. Disconnect the grey lead connector [C] from the camshaft position sensor lead connector (lead covered with black plastic tubing) at the back of the cylinder head cover.

4. Disconnect the small black lead connector [D] from the water temperature sensor located below the throttle bodies holders.

Remove the Engine subharness.

Installation
5. Installation of the engine sub harness is the reverse of steps 1 through 4.

Rout the water temperature lead between throttle body holders #3 and #4.

Install the Throttle Body Assembly if it was removed.

Install the Stick Coil Subharness
