Your ZX feeling horny?
02/08/09 2:03 PM

This HOW-TO is from the zx14ninja.com forum. It was posted by MattTheHat on 3/13/2008.

I picked up one of those Stroebl 139 dB air horns from Aerostitch a couple of weeks ago. I painted it with the closest color to CP Blue that I could find at the local auto parts place. It's not an exact match but it's close enough, especially since it's hidden up under the front fairing.

If anyone's wondering, this mother scratcher is loud! It draws enough current to require a relay or it's no louder than stock. I ran 12 gauge wires all the way to the relay and then to the horn. The stock horn harness plugs right into the relay. It's all fairly tidy. I did have to bend the stock horn bracket a bit, but everything seems to clear full left to full right.

Wiring diagram for these horns. This diagram shows two horns, surely you can figure it out for one.

Use a 20 amp fuse, Per the manufacturer, this horn should be mounted so that the cylinder is vertical (with the horn facing down). There should be no more than a 15 degree variance from the vertical position. If it is not mounted per these specifications, then the horn may cease to function after a period of time.
Do not put it in the stock horn location, first time you are hard on the brakes, the horn will be embeded in your rad.
Put under one of the side covers, etc.

Functions of a relay:

Relays will also fail after a time. Some are even rated by the number of times they will close a circuit before burning out (common relays are usually rated to 100,000 operations). The advantage is that a relay is normally cheaper and easier to replace than a switch. Using a relay also allows the use of smaller guage wire to the switch as well.

hey bg, I've got one of those horns but its still in the box. I haven't had a chance to figure out where to put it. So yours is above the fender and in front of the radiator. Next time you doing that short twisty diversion to work, could you just take a peak under there when you are under real heavy braking and let me know how close it comes to the fender? ;)
Thanks. Have the horn and fender ever 'connected'? Are there any gotchas to installing it?

I tried to mount my horn there but it hit the fender. I had to stick it inside the fairing on the right side. It is not exposed but it is still petty loud.
