San Diego to Quail Motorcycle Gathering
05/19/17 3:59 PM

Quick little trip....
Left San Diego on Cinco de Mayo, just drilled up the freeway about 150 miles or so to Ventura, where I left the slab for a lovely bit of snaky tarmac that is the CA 33. First, stopped at Ojai Deer Lodge for a quick lunch, great spot.

Hard to do this road justice with just a phone camera, but it is really nice. Smooth, twisty, crazy with wildflowers this time of year,

Spent the night near Pismo Beach, then straight up the 101 to a town called Greenfield, from there a tiny (occasionally 1 lane tiny) road called G-16 to Carmel. G-16 is a bit too tight for a ZX14, but still had a blast on it, but definitely not scraping pegs. (Dirty in spots as well)

Got to the event (after dropping off bike and a short Uber ride from our hotel in Carmel), my buddy Geoff (BMW S1000RR) who lives in SF came down to meet me.

TONS of very cool old bikes, mostly race bikes, very few Harleys.
Some guy named Kenny Roberts allegedly used to ride this around...

Same era Suzuki RG race bike...

This is a bucket list bike for me...85 Yamaha RZ500 V4 2-stroke...

Or maybe THIS...some crazy guy shoehorned in an RZ500 motor into a newer R6 frame...check out the smoke in the picture as he ran it...

Close up of the bike by itself...

A company called IVI had a couple of really nice old CBXs there...

And this guy cracked me up, show is over, kick-started his old (and SPOTLESS) BMW and rode off...engine sounded perfect...really cool I thought.

Left Carmel on Sunday morning after a night of boozing it up in Carmel (be sure to check out Clint Eastwood's old bar called Hog's Breath if you find yourself in Carmel). Took the G-16 again, then south on 101 all the way to just North of San Luis Obispo, where I took Hwy 58 east. GREAT road, combination of hairpins at both ends, some sweepers and some rolling straights in the middle! Photo of the rolling straight off Google...I was having too much fun to stop for photos.

Then back to Ojai for the night, then home the next day. Got very lucky with weather, storms all around, but the below was as close as I ever got to being rained on!

Next trip, Laguna Seca for World Superbikes. Horrible news about Nicky Hayden, really hope he pulls through. Thoughts and prayers with the whole Hayden clan. :-(

Very nice ride. Now that's a ride I could get into.
