When replacing steels and fibres in the clutch, does the smooth side of teh steels face to the outside ? I cannot find this mentioned anywhere ??

Steel flat or cut side faces pressure plate. Stamped out frictions may have a flatter side than the round side, so those too face the pressure plate are also the friction flat sides.

Old CBX style have the pressure plate [first or] inside, so the steels cut faces into the engine. That's how I remember steel-cuts faces the pressure plate.

Rounded edge faces inward. Sharp, edge faces out. Learned that one from Hub and darned if that wasn't how my clutch pack was from the factory.

This is for Gen1 but should be universal, I'm sure. step five, fifth photo.

See how bad these look once you can see the indents. Rook's stood up well with that burnt clutch pack. I'd also drop the oil pan and take out that material that cakes at the bottom of the pan. Can't destroy matter so it matters that more is going thru the engine with new material being shaved down to dust. Kind of like brake pad dust settling at the bottom.

Yep, those were about toast. They were still gripping though. I would be changing them next summer but I'm not worried about it until I actually get the bike all fixed after the crash.

I think 'The Hand' or 'smoke' that had his own 14 website, he installed his backwards and it had no effect. I kind of agree [memory] wise.

My way of thinking is to go palm to palm with both hands. Notice how the fingers fight each other if you just threw in the plates any old way, this would be the battle of direction. But if palm over the top of one hand, now the fingers move in the one direction.

With that kind of memory happening, it might not matter if all steels are facing in or out. As long as they don't finger fight is the bite.

Okay Chrly.Do your steels have a beveled edge on any of em?If not,just put em in there.I seem to recall the first one in did have a beveled edge.But not sure.I don't have the manual anymore.It's in that manual.A diagram showing how they sit at the first in plates.Also shows the pressure spring(it's a large round ring shaped at an angle when installed).

The teeth on my steels are defitiely rounded and smooth on one side and sharp on the other. When placing them in the basket there is a slight diff in how they slide in. one wy is " smoother" than the other. My thoughts were that the release of teh clutch lever should be smoother of the two so I did it with teh smooth side facing out .. Seemed to work ok ( best personal et on first run out and again at the end of the day ) so I am not changing :)

As far as the "ring " goes . You must be talking about the judder ring and I knew about it and proper position.

Then the next was noticing how someone took the time to line the cut sides to face the pressure plate at the factory assembly line. So between memory direction, all lined up is the one direction either way, I wouldn't waste my time to flip them, knowing 'The Hand' threw his facing into the engine, had no problem run after run... but factory assembly wise, the trick is to face the cuts toward the pressure plate is how I do not need to book to tell me direction.

Even HD with their old roller caged steels, I noticed the cut side with a stamped mark saying "OUT" on each steel plate. So again, someone took the time to find the flat side, stamp it for direction. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hub. You are 1000 times more knowledgeable than I . And I appreciate all teh help ,But sometimes I just stubbornly ignore good advice until something ??? happens to convince me to change..Sliding out smoother than sliding in just has stuck in my lil peabrain :) I did just now check for markings of any kind on an extra steel I have ;) I DOO listen !!
