Camshaft Position Sensor
04/19/17 8:20 PM

Camshaft Position Sensor Gen1
The Camshaft Position Sensor Lead is housed in a black plastic tube that lays under the stick coil subharness. The Camshaft Position Sensor Lead connects the camshaft position sensor to the engine subharness. The photos and copy will provide further information about Camshaft Position Sensor Lead routing. The camshaft position sensor lead can be cleared to the front of the engine to perform other procedures. The only reason the sensor itself would need to be removed would be to test it.

It is a good idea to label each half of the leads as soon as you disconnect them. Use a marking pen and masking tape to identify the leads.

Do first:
Remove the battery negative cable from the ground screw on frame (Battery Removal, steps 1, 2 and 3).

OPTIONAL: Remove the Stick Coil Subharness. You can remove the camshaft position lead by sliding it out from under the stick coil subharness but in most cases (such as cylinder head cover removal), you will be removing the other top engine wires anyway.

Removal
1. Disconnect the grey lead connectors at the back of the cylinder head cover.

2. Remove the RH rear reed valve cover screw to free the wire retainer or just unbend the clip a bit (see also, PAIR Removal, step 5) to remove the wire.

3. Clear the camshaft sensor sensor wire to the front of the engine.

4. The camshaft position sensor must be removed if it is necessary to separate it and the lead from the motorcycle completely.

From the 2008 ZX-14 Service Manual, p. 16-54:

Remove: Camshaft Position Sensor Bolt [A] Camshaft Position Sensor [B]

Installation Camshaft Position Sensor
5. Install the camshaft position sensor if it was removed.

From the 2008 ZX-14 Service Manual, p. 16-54:

•Replace the O-ring of the camshaft position sensor.

•Apply soap and water solution to the new O-ring.

• Tighten:
Torque - Camshaft Position Sensor Bolt: 9.8 N·m (1.0 kgf·m, 87 in·lb)

6. Rout the lead over the cylinder head cover below the stick coil subharness (see Stick Coil Subharness) to the retainer mount on the RH reed valve cover.

7. Install the retainer to the reed valve cover bolt if it was removed (see PAIR Removal, step 8) or place the lead securely in the retainer.

8. Connect the grey leads [C] at the top rear of the cylinder head cover.
