Dynojet Map Comparison Feature
07/08/09 1:32 PM

I was playing with the software on my new Powercommander III for the CBR 1000 and was using the Map Comparison feature to see what the differences were between the zero map M125-000(same as ECU) , the stock map M125-001(optimized for stock exhaust and air filter) and the M125-006 Yoshimura RS-5 full system map . I was more than a bit surprised by what I found. Logically, I assumed the full system map M125-006 would be richer throughout most of the higher rpms and load settings compared to the M125-001 stock map due to expected higher efficiency and airflow volumes and thus the need for more fuel. I was shocked that the stocker required more fueling at almost every throttle opening position and rpm combination. I then got to comparing other maps for other full systems by different manufacturers and all except two, Micron and TI force, were flowing substantially more fuel at most throttle position and rpm combinations. The Yoshi, MIcron and TI Force curves were all very similiar. What does all this mean? I'd be lying to you if I said I knew, maybe it means nothing but thinking back to basic thermodynamics from college days, more fuel = more energy released = more power.

Either my logic on all this is basically flawed, this is more black magic than science or the Yoshi, Micron and TI are duds. Time will tell but I think I'm going to try the stock map M125-001 first without the Yoshi and see how it runs. The mapping is very different i.e. much richer than stock and I'm curious how it will run.

OK, so much for theory, I downloaded the Sato Full System map and the injector duty cycles are almost identical across the table with the Yoshimura RS-5 mapping. I just need to install all this stuff and go ride the thing and see how she does.

BTW, Dynojet maps are a bit rich for safety but I'm near sea level which should make it close.

when ?

Kruz, I must have used and compared almost every map in Dyno-jets website for our bikes(fuelmoto and brocks too). It seemed to me that the maps that worked the best in our bikes never matched my mod set up. It will be interesting to see what you come up with for the honda. Cheers.

Kruz,

Yes, that stock map is a surprise... it is pretty darn rich.

Did you pull it up and look at it JDC? They're drowning that thing in gas. Do you have any theories?
I eventually will get it dyno tuned but am a bit leery. Had a couple of bad experiences early on with the "Authorized" DynoJet Tuning Centers, their auto-tuning software is not foolproof and requires a certain degree of operator knowledge to get it right. If I go that route I'll probably take it to Johny Cheese.

Thanks for the tip Romans, I've heard that from a couple of different guys who have played with different maps. The first couple of maps we tried for the 14s were complete duds before stumbling onto a good one. Each bike seems to react differently to a map, it's like they have their own personalities. My big thing is smoothness of power delivery, these things all make enough power to scare you silly but the way it lays down the power has got to feel right or I'm not havin fun.

The stock is super rich up top to keep the catalst cool in the headers and exhaust. I get better gas mileage since I went to the full Yosh exhaust and custom tune.

Y'know Hoopie that sounds like you just might be on to something there. What I don't get though, is the stock ECU map(zero map M125-000) was already rich enough to insure a long CAT life but then DynoJet adds more fuel richening it up even further on their stock exhaust/air filter map (M125-001). Maybe their legal department had something to do with that. The maps for the 4-2-1 full systems are richer than the stock ECU settings(zero map M125-000) which is to be expected as the whole idea is to flow more air (and fuel) but leaner than the stock exhaust/air filter map M125-001. Either it has something to do with the CATS or they flat screwed the pooch on this one.

Kruz,

I agree with the above posts, and I think as well it keeps the bike safer from throttle abuse/hotter engine.

Most OEM 14's could do ok by leaning about 10-15% above 4 to 4 1/2 K, and richening the 3-4-4 1/2 K by about 10-15%.

PS: I am having a sale on ZX14 Barca Loungers!

Well, I guess we can speculate till we're blue in the face but the only way to know for sure is bolt this stuff on, load the map and go ride it. I should be able to get everything on tomorrow morning so I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I really don't know what to expect this time around. The 14 was an eye opener when I did all the mods but I kinda already knew how that one was going to run ahead of time, this one I'm not so sure.....just have to wait and see.

On rich vs lean I prefer to error on the rich side. Since I'm not racing, motor longevity is the motivating factor.
